# Contact email Source: https://docs.scayla.io/editr/guides/account-and-settings/contact-email Set the email address Scayla uses to contact you about your account. Scayla uses your contact email for account-related communication, such as important product updates, security notices, or service disruptions. Keep it current so you don't miss anything important. This email is separate from any support email you configure on the [Contact support block](/editr/guides/editing-options/contact-support). The contact email is for Scayla to reach you as the merchant, not for customers to reach your support team. ## Change your contact email From your Editr admin, go to **Settings**. Scroll to the **General** section at the top of the page. Enter the new email address. Save your settings. After changing the email, verify the new address so notifications are delivered correctly. ## Related guides * [Verifying your email address](/editr/guides/account-and-settings/email-verification) # Verifying your email address Source: https://docs.scayla.io/editr/guides/account-and-settings/email-verification Verify your contact email so you receive important account notifications from Scayla. Your contact email must be verified before Scayla can reliably send you account notifications. If your email is unverified, you'll see a banner at the top of your settings page prompting you to verify it. ## Verify your email In Editr settings, find the **Email unverified** banner at the top of the page and click **Send**. Scayla sends a confirmation email to your contact email address. Open the email and click the verification link to confirm the address. If the email doesn't arrive within a few minutes, check your spam folder. You can click **Send** again from the banner to resend the confirmation. ## What happens if your email is unverified Scayla may not be able to reach you about important account matters, such as service updates or billing changes. Verifying only takes a moment and protects against missing anything important. ## Related guides * [Contact email](/editr/guides/account-and-settings/contact-email) # Add-to-cart limit Source: https://docs.scayla.io/editr/guides/configuring-editr/add-to-cart-limit Set the maximum quantity a customer can hold of any one item in their edited order. The add-to-cart limit caps the total quantity per item a customer can have in their order after editing, including the original quantity. This prevents abuse and stops customers from brute-forcing your inventory limits. ## Why the limit exists Without a cap, a customer could: * Add hundreds of units of an item as a malicious act against your store * Discover your exact available inventory by trial and error The limit puts a reasonable ceiling on edits without affecting normal customer behavior. ## Default value The default is **5 units per item**. Enough for most genuine edits, such as adding extras or buying for a friend, without exposing you to abuse. ## Interaction with Shopify's inventory limits Shopify's inventory limits still apply. For products that don't allow overselling, a customer can't exceed your actual available stock, even if the add-to-cart limit is higher. ## Set the limit From your Editr admin, go to **Settings**. Scroll to the **Add-to-cart limit** section. Enter a whole number in the **Limit per item** field. Save your settings. ## Related guides * [Edit items block](/editr/guides/editing-options/edit-items) * [Add items block](/editr/guides/editing-options/add-items) # Customer notifications Source: https://docs.scayla.io/editr/guides/configuring-editr/customer-notifications Send customers an email when their order is cancelled through Editr. Restrictions prevent customers from editing orders that match conditions you define. Use them to protect orders that shouldn't be changed, for example orders with a given tag, or orders shipping to high-risk countries. Restrictions are stacked so if an order matches any restriction, editing is blocked for that order. All restrictions are configured in **Editr app → Settings → Editing restrictions**. ## Order tags Block orders based on their order tags. Useful for segmenting orders that shouldn't be editable, such as wholesale, pre-orders, or subscription orders. * Click **Select tags** to pick from tags already in use on your store * Click **Add custom tag** to enter a tag that isn't yet in use, for example for development stores or when setting up a new tag for a future workflow ## Sales channel Block orders based on where they were placed. Useful if you only want Editr to apply to one specific channel. Available channels depend on what's installed in your store. Common options include Online Store, Point of Sale, and Shop. ## Fulfillment location Block orders based on the location fulfilling them. Useful when certain locations have different fulfillment processes that don't support mid-process changes. Click **Select fulfillment locations** to choose from your store's locations. ## Shipping country Block orders based on where they're being shipped. Useful when certain destinations carry higher fraud risk or need manual review. Click **Select countries** to choose one or more countries to restrict. ## Fraud risk level Block orders based on Shopify's automatic fraud risk assessment. Useful for catching potentially fraudulent orders before customers can manipulate them. Risk levels you can block: High, Medium, Low, Pending, None. Select all levels you want to block. If none are selected, orders with any risk level can be edited. ## Related guides * [Editing window](/editr/guides/configuring-editr/editing-window) * [Refund options](/editr/guides/configuring-editr/refund-options) # Editing window Source: https://docs.scayla.io/editr/guides/configuring-editr/editing-window Set how long customers have to edit or cancel their order after checkout. The editing window is the global time period after checkout during which customers can edit or cancel their order. Once the window closes, editing options disappear from your storefront for that order. During the window, Editr applies an order hold to prevent the order from progressing to fulfillment before the customer has a chance to make changes. ## Duration options | Option | Notes | | --------------- | ------------------------------------------ | | 15 minutes | | | 30 minutes | Recommended | | 60 minutes | | | Custom duration | Enter any value in minutes, hours, or days | 30 minutes is the recommended default. It's long enough for most customers to spot and correct a mistake, but short enough that your fulfillment workflow isn't meaningfully delayed. ## Set the editing window From the Editr app, go to **Settings**. Scroll to the **Editing window** section. Choose one of the preset options, or select **Custom duration** and enter a value and unit. Save your settings. ## How the order hold works When an order is placed, Editr applies a hold that prevents it from entering your fulfillment workflow until the editing window closes. Orders won't show as ready to fulfill immediately after checkout. This is expected behavior. ## Related guides * [Editing restrictions](/editr/guides/configuring-editr/editing-restrictions) * [Time left countdown banner](/editr/guides/editing-options/time-left-countdown) # Refund options Source: https://docs.scayla.io/editr/guides/configuring-editr/refund-options Choose how customers are refunded when they cancel or reduce their order value. When a customer cancels their order or reduces its value through Editr, the refund is processed automatically. If inventory isn't returning to your store after a customer cancels an order or reduces quantities, check the causes below. ## Quick diagnostics 1. Find the cancelled or edited order in Shopify admin 2. Note the items and quantities removed 3. Check the relevant product's inventory at the original fulfillment location 4. If stock hasn't returned, continue below ## 1. Restocking is turned off **Most common issue.** Restocking is a setting that must be enabled. **Check:** In **Editr → Settings → Restocking**, confirm the **Restock inventory** toggle is on. **Fix:** Turn on the toggle and save. Note that this only affects edits made after the change. Past cancellations or reductions aren't retroactively restocked. ## 2. Product doesn't track inventory If a product's variant has inventory tracking disabled, Editr can't restock it, even with restocking on. **Check:** In Shopify admin, open the product and check whether **Track quantity** is enabled for the variant. **Fix:** If you want inventory tracking, enable it. Otherwise, this is expected behavior for untracked products. ## 3. Wrong location checked Inventory returns to the original fulfillment location for each item, not a default or primary location. **Check:** In Shopify admin, look at the order's fulfillment location. Check inventory at that specific location, not your overall stock count. **Fix:** No fix needed. This is expected for multi-location stores. ## Still not working? When a customer cancels an order or reduces its value, Editr processes refunds automatically. If a refund hasn't appeared, check the causes below. ## Quick diagnostics 1. Find the cancelled or edited order in Shopify admin 2. Open the **Refunds** section of the order timeline 3. Check the refund status 4. Continue below based on what you see ## 1. Refund is still processing Refunds to original payment methods can take a few days to appear on the customer's statement, depending on their bank or card provider. **Check:** In the order timeline, look for a refund entry. If it shows "Refunded" on Shopify's side, the delay is at the customer's payment provider. **Fix:** Ask the customer to wait 5-10 business days before raising it with their bank. ## 2. Refund method is set to store credit If your refund option is set to store credit, no money is returned to the original payment method. **Check:** In **Editr → Settings → Refund options**, see which method is selected. **Fix:** If the customer expected a cash refund, either change your setting to **Original payment method** and manually process the refund in Shopify, or clarify with the customer that their refund is available as store credit. ## 3. Order had no payment to refund If the order value after edits is the same as or higher than the original, there's nothing to refund. If the order was free (100% discount), there's also nothing to refund. **Check:** Compare the original order total to the current total. **Fix:** No action needed. This is expected behavior. ## Still not working? Yes, three things: 1. Turn on the global app toggle in the Editr admin 2. Add editing blocks to your **Order status** page in the checkout and accounts editor 3. Add the Edit order banner or Time left countdown to your **Thank you** page Until the global toggle is on and at least one block is added, customers won't see anything on your storefront. ### Is Editr free? Yes, Editr is free to use. If pricing changes in the future, we'll notify you well in advance. ### What's the difference between the global toggle and the individual theme blocks? The **global toggle** is a kill switch. When off, all editing blocks are hidden from customers regardless of theme configuration. The **theme blocks** control which editing options appear and where they appear on the Order status and Thank you pages. Both must be set up for customers to see editing options. ## Editing options and restrictions ### What can customers edit? Customers can cancel their order, change quantities, swap variants, remove items, and add new items from your store. They cannot edit shipping addresses, payment methods, or discounts yet. ### How do restrictions stack? If an order matches any restriction across any category (tags, channel, location, country, fraud risk), editing is blocked entirely for that order. ### Can I disable editing for specific products? Not directly. You can tag orders containing those products and use an **Order tag restriction** to block editing on those orders, but there's no product-level restriction in Editr itself. ### Can customers still edit after the editing window closes? No. Once the window closes, all editing options disappear from the storefront for that order. ## Inventory and refunds ### How are refunds processed? Refunds are processed automatically when a customer cancels their order or reduces its value. You choose whether refunds go to the original payment method or as store credit in [Refund options](/editr/guides/configuring-editr/refund-options). ### Where does restocked inventory go? When restocking is on, inventory returns to the original fulfillment location for each item on the order. Multi-location stores keep stock in the right place automatically. ### Do I get charged for refunds processed by Editr? Your Shopify payment provider's standard refund fees apply, same as manual refunds. Editr itself doesn't charge for edits or refunds. ## Customer experience ### Will customers be notified when their order changes? Only if you turn on [customer notifications](/editr/guides/configuring-editr/customer-notifications). Currently, only order cancellation emails are supported, using Shopify's existing **Order cancelled** template. ### What does a customer see when editing isn't available? The editing blocks don't render on orders that are outside the window or blocked by a restriction. If you've added the Time left countdown or Edit order banner, they switch to an "unavailable" state with a message you can customize. ### Can I preview what customers see? Yes. Use Shopify's **Preview** feature in the checkout and accounts editor, or place a test order and view the Order status page yourself. ## Still need help? Can't find your answer? [Contact support](/editr/help/support/contact-support) and we'll help you out. # A customer can't edit their order Source: https://docs.scayla.io/editr/help/setup-issues/customer-cant-edit-order Diagnose why a specific customer can't edit a specific order. If a customer reports they can't edit a particular order (and other customers can edit theirs), the issue is usually with that specific order rather than your setup. ## Quick diagnostics 1. Find the order in your Shopify admin 2. Note the order's tags, sales channel, fulfillment location, shipping country, and fraud risk 3. Compare against your restrictions and editing window 4. Continue below if nothing stands out ## 1. Editing window has closed **Most common issue.** Once the editing window expires, editing options disappear from the storefront for that order. **Check:** Look at the order's creation time. Compare against your [editing window](/editr/guides/configuring-editr/editing-window) duration. **Fix:** This is expected behavior. If customers need more time, increase the editing window duration in Editr settings. ## 2. Order matches a restriction The order may be blocked by one of your editing restrictions. **Check:** Go to **Editr admin → Settings → Editing restrictions**. Compare each restriction category against the order: * **Order tags:** does the order have any restricted tag? * **Sales channel:** was the order placed on a restricted channel? * **Fulfillment location:** is the order being fulfilled from a restricted location? * **Shipping country:** is the order shipping to a restricted country? * **Fraud risk:** does the order have a restricted fraud risk level? **Fix:** If a restriction is blocking legitimate edits, adjust it. Remember that restrictions stack, so removing just one may not be enough if the order matches multiple. ## 3. Global toggle is off If the global toggle is off, editing is disabled for every order, not just this one. **Check:** In Editr admin, confirm the App status is **On**. **Fix:** Toggle **Show editing blocks to customers** to on. ## Still not working? If editing blocks aren't appearing on your Order status or Thank you pages, check the causes below in order. ## Quick diagnostics 1. Open an incognito browser window 2. Place a test order or view a recent Order status page 3. Check whether the editing blocks render 4. If not, continue troubleshooting below ## 1. Global toggle is off **Most common issue.** If the global toggle in Editr is off, all blocks stay hidden regardless of theme setup. **Check:** In your Editr admin, look at the **App status** section on the homepage. It should show "On". **Fix:** Toggle **Show editing blocks to customers** to on. ## 2. Blocks not added in the theme Editing blocks don't appear until you add them to your Order status or Thank you pages. **Check:** Open the checkout and accounts editor (Shopify admin → Settings → Checkout → Customize, or via the theme editor). Look for Editr blocks on the relevant page. **Fix:** Follow [Adding editing blocks to your theme](/editr/guides/editing-options/adding-editing-blocks) to add the blocks you want. ## 3. Changes made on the wrong theme If you added blocks on a draft or duplicate theme that isn't published, customers won't see them. **Check:** In **Online Store → Themes**, confirm the theme marked **Live** is the one you edited. **Fix:** Either publish the theme you edited, or repeat the block setup on your live theme. ## 4. Browser caching Shopify storefronts cache aggressively. Recent changes may not appear until the cache refreshes. **Check:** Test in an incognito window or a different browser. **Fix:** Clear your browser cache, or wait a few minutes and retest in incognito. ## Still not working? Instead of emailing your support team, customers can fix simple mistakes like the wrong size, quantity, or a missed item themselves. ## What you can do with Editr Add a cancel button to the Order Status page, with automatic refunds and optional inventory restocking. Allow quantity changes, variant swaps, and item removal before fulfillment starts. Let shoppers add forgotten products to their order in a few clicks. Restrict editing by order tag, sales channel, fulfillment location, shipping country, or fraud risk. ## Get started in 3 steps Enable the global app toggle in the Editr admin. Editing stays hidden from customers until you add blocks to your theme. Open the theme editor and drop in the editing options you want customers to see after checkout. [Add editing blocks →](/editr/guides/editing-options/adding-editing-blocks) Prompt customers to add more items straight after checkout with a banner and countdown. ## Configure how editing works Once the basics are live, tailor Editr to your store: Set how long customers have to edit after placing an order. Block edits on specific orders based on your rules. Choose between original payment method or store credit. Return inventory automatically when orders are reduced or cancelled. ## Need help? Your preferences update immediately once saved. ## Understanding usage alerts ### 80% quota alert **When you receive it:** When your tracked visits reach 80% of your monthly quota (e.g., 400 of 500 visits on Growth plan). **Why it matters:** Gives you advance warning to take action before features pause. **What you can do:** * Create 301 redirects for high-traffic broken links or rule matches * [Upgrade your plan](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription) for more tracked visits * Review and optimize your redirect strategy Keep this notification enabled to avoid surprises. It gives you time to act before hitting your limit. ### 100% quota alert **When you receive it:** When your tracked visits reach 100% of your monthly quota. **What happens:** * Broken link tracking pauses (no new 404s are recorded) * Redirect rules pause (pattern-based redirects stop working) * 301 redirects continue working (unlimited visits) * Existing data remains accessible **What you can do:** * Wait until next month when quota resets automatically * [Upgrade your plan](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription) immediately for higher quota * Convert patterns to 301 redirects to free up future quota **Recovery:** Once you upgrade or your quota resets, broken link tracking and redirect rules resume automatically. ## Email delivery issues ### Not receiving notifications If you're not getting expected notifications: **Check your email address:** 1. Go to **Settings** 2. Verify your contact email address is correct 3. [Update it](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/change-email) if needed **Check spam folder:** * Notifications might be filtered to spam/junk * Mark our emails as "Not spam" **Verify notification settings:** * Ensure the specific notification type is enabled in Settings * Save your settings after making changes **Check quota status:** * Usage alerts only send when thresholds are reached * If you're at 75% quota, you won't get the 80% alert yet ## Related guides * [Change your email address](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/change-email) - Update your contact email * [Understanding usage quotas](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/usage-quotas) - Learn about tracked visits limits * [Manage your subscription](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription) - Upgrade for higher quotas ## Need help? Enterprise users also have access to [rule matches.](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-overview) | Plan | Monthly | Annual (2 months free) | Tracked visits/mo | | -------------- | --------------- | ---------------------- | ------------------------ | | **Free** | \$0 | \$0 | 10 | | **Starter** | \$2.99 / month | \$2.50 / month | 50 | | **Growth** | \$4.99 / month | \$4.17 / month | 500 | | **Enterprise** | \$10.99 / month | \$9.17 / month | Unlimited + rule matches | ## Change your plan Increase your tracked visits quota or access Enterprise features by upgrading. From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **Billing** in the app navigation menu. Choose your desired plan (Starter, Growth, or Enterprise). Choose billing frequency: * **Monthly**: Pay month-to-month, cancel anytime * **Annual**: Get 2 months free, billed once per year Click **Activate plan**. **What happens after changing plan:** * New quota takes effect immediately * You're charged a prorated amount for the current billing period * Future billing uses the new plan price * All existing data and redirects remain intact If you downgrade and your usage exceeds the new quota limit, features will pause when your new billing period starts. Review your usage before downgrading. ## Cancel your subscription You can downgrade to the Free plan at any time to cancel your subscription. ## Related guides * [Understanding usage quotas](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/usage-quotas) - Learn how tracked visits work * [Understanding analytics](/redirect-pro/guides/monitoring-performance/analytics-overview) - Monitor your usage patterns ## Need help? Tracked visits are the monthly allowance of visitor interactions that count toward your plan's quota. Each plan includes a specific number of tracked visits per month. | Plan | Tracked visits/month | | -------------- | -------------------- | | **Free** | 10 | | **Starter** | 50 | | **Growth** | 500 | | **Enterprise** | Unlimited | ## What counts as a tracked visit? **Tracked visits include:** * **404 page visits** — when visitors access broken links * **Redirect rule activations** — when visitors trigger your pattern-based redirects * **Live redirect visits** — when visitors are redirected from an active page by a live redirect **Does NOT count:** * **301 redirect visits** — unlimited on all plans * **Pages that load successfully** — normal site visits Think of tracked visits as the "active work" Redirect Pro does each month to catch problems (404s), apply dynamic rules, and redirect visitors from active pages. Permanent 301 redirects don't count because they're unlimited. ## How quota usage works ### Monthly reset Your quota resets automatically every calendar month. ### Usage tracking As visitors access 404 pages, trigger redirect rules, or visit pages with live redirects, your usage increases: **Settings display:** * **Current plan**: e.g. "Enterprise" * **Current usage**: "325 tracked visits" ### What happens at quota limits **At 80% usage:** * Email alert sent (if enabled in Settings) * Features still work normally * Time to take action before hitting 100% **At 100% usage:** * Email alert sent (if enabled) * **Broken link tracking pauses** - new 404s or visits to already detected 404s aren't recorded * **Redirect rules pause** - pattern-based redirects stop working * **Live redirects pause** - active page redirects stop working * **301 redirects continue** - unlimited, always active * Existing data remains accessible **Recovery:** * Upgrade your plan for instant quota increase * Wait until monthly reset for automatic renewal ## Managing your quota ### Reduce quota usage If consistently hitting quota limits, try these strategies: **1. Convert broken links to 301 redirects:** * Review [broken links](/redirect-pro/guides/tracking-broken-links/managing-broken-links) * Create 301 redirects for high-traffic broken URLs * Future visits won't count toward quota **2. Convert redirect rule matches to 301s (Enterprise):** * View [rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) * Identify high-traffic URL patterns * [Convert to 301 redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) **3. Upgrade your plan:** * [Upgrade to next tier](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription) for more tracked visits * Growth: 500 visits/month * Enterprise: Unlimited visits ### Plan the right quota **Choose based on your needs:** **Free (10 visits/month):** * Development and testing stores * Very low traffic stores * Trying out the app **Starter (50 visits/month):** * New stores with minimal broken links * Stores with mostly 301 redirects * Low-traffic stores **Growth (500 visits/month):** * Established stores with active SEO * Moderate redirect rule or live redirect usage * Regular broken link management **Enterprise (Unlimited):** * High-traffic stores * Active redirect rule or live redirect usage * Post-migration stores with many pattern redirects * Stores needing the rule matches feature Start with a lower plan and upgrade as needed. It's easy to upgrade mid-month if you're approaching limits. ## Viewing detailed usage ### Dashboard overview **Homepage shows:** * Total tracked visits this month * Breakdown: 404 visits, redirect rule visits, and live redirect visits ### Analytics page **See detailed metrics:** 1. Click **See analytics** on dashboard 2. View usage over time 3. Use date range picker for specific periods 4. Identify usage spikes or patterns See [Understanding analytics](/redirect-pro/guides/monitoring-performance/analytics-overview) for details. ## Common quota questions No, you can't purchase additional visits. Instead: * Upgrade to a higher plan for more monthly visits * Convert patterns to 301 redirects (unlimited) * Wait for monthly quota reset No, unused tracked visits don't roll over to the next month. Your quota resets to the full amount each month. Your new quota takes effect immediately. For example: * Starter (50 visits) → Growth (500 visits) * Had used 45 / 50 * After upgrade: 45 / 500 * Gained 450 additional visits instantly ## Related guides * [Understanding analytics](/redirect-pro/guides/monitoring-performance/analytics-overview) - Monitor your usage patterns * [Manage your subscription](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription) - Upgrade for more quota * [Manage broken links](/redirect-pro/guides/tracking-broken-links/managing-broken-links) - Convert 404s to 301 redirects * [View and manage rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) - Optimize redirect rules (Enterprise) ## Need help? They are server-side, permanent redirects that preserve your SEO rankings. Use permanent 301 redirects when you: * Delete or unpublish a product, collection, or page * Change a URL structure * Migrate content from one URL to another * Want to fix broken links that customers are trying to access **301 redirects don't work on active pages.** The "Redirect from" URL must return a 404 error. If you need to redirect visitors from an active page that must remain live, use a [live redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/create-live-redirect) instead. **301 redirects vs. redirect rules vs. live redirects**: Use individual 301 redirects for specific broken URL changes. For pattern-based redirects affecting multiple broken URLs, use [redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-overview). For redirecting visitors away from active pages, use [live redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/create-live-redirect). ## Create a 301 redirect From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **URL redirects** in the app navigation menu. Click the **Create 301 redirect** button in the top right corner. In the form that appears: * **Redirect from**: Enter the old URL path (e.g., `/old-product`) * **Redirect to**: Enter the new URL where visitors should be sent For the "Redirect from" field you only need to enter the URL path, not the full domain. For example, use `/old-page` instead of `https://yourstore.com/old-page`. Click **Save redirect**. The redirect is now active and will immediately start sending visitors from the old URL to the new one, and transfer search rankings to the new URL. ## Redirect from options The "Redirect from" field only accepts **internal URL paths** from your store - no need to add your domain. ✓ **Accepted formats:** * **Path only**: `/old-product` (recommended) * **Path with query parameters**: `/old-product?variant=12345` ✗ **Not accepted:** * Full URLs with your domain: `https://yourstore.com/old-product` * External URLs: `https://othersite.com/page` You can only create 301 redirects from broken URLs that return a 404 error. If the URL still loads a valid webpage, the 301 redirect won't work. To redirect visitors from an active page, use a [live redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/create-live-redirect) instead. ### URLs you cannot redirect from Certain URL paths are reserved by Shopify and cannot be used for redirects: * **URLs beginning with** `/apps`, `/application`, `/cart`, `/carts`, `/orders`, `/services`, or `/shop`. * **Fixed Shopify paths**: `/` (your homepage), `/404` (your 404 template), `/products` (the main products index), `/collections` (the main collections index), `/collections/all`. * **Reserved paths**: `/collections/vendors`, `/collections/types`, `/a/`, `/community/`, `/tools/` * You can't redirect MyShopify domain paths ending `/shop` or `/services` **Collection tag filtering:** Shopify does not allow 301 redirects for URLs that use collection tag filtering (such as `yourstore.com/collections/collection-name/tag-name`). Even if no products exist with that tag, the URL path is still considered valid so can only be redirected with a [live redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/live-redirects-overview). **Example of what won't work:** * ❌ `/cart` → `/checkout` * ❌ `/products` → `/collections` These are Shopify platform restrictions that apply to all redirect apps, not just Redirect Pro. ## Redirect to options The "Redirect to" field accepts both internal paths and external URLs, for example: **Internal pages** (use path only): * `/collections/new-arrivals` * `/products/blue-shirt` * `/pages/about` * `/` (homepage) **External URLs** (use full URL with `https://`): * `https://example.com` * `https://blog.yourcompany.com/article` For internal redirects, use paths only (e.g., `/products/shirt`). For external redirects, include the full URL with `https://`. ## Redirect limitations and special cases You cannot redirect from a URL ending in `.html` to the same URL without `.html`. Shopify treats these as the same URL because the platform automatically handles HTML formatting for cleaner URLs. **Example that won't work:** * ❌ `/old-page.html` → `/old-page` URLs with complex query strings or special characters (such as `/brands/dell.html?_bc_fsnf=1&interface=type`) may not redirect as expected. Test these redirects thoroughly after creation. Consider using simpler URLs when possible. Creating a URL redirect applies to all language or market subfolders set up using international sales tools. **How it works:** For example, your primary market is the United States on `example.com`. You also have a market for Canada on a subfolder at `example.com/en-ca`. You decide to stop selling a blue t-shirt on your store, so you delete the product, and then create a single URL redirect from `/products/blue-t-shirt` to `/collections/t-shirts`. * It works for ALL subfolder markets: * US (primary) customers are automatically redirected from `/products/old-shirt` to `/collections/shirts` * Canada customers are automatically redirected from `/en-ca/products/old-shirt` to `/en-ca/collections/shirts` **Specific locale redirects:** You can still create individual redirects for each subfolder if you want to redirect people to a different destination for each market. For example, if you need to redirect specific locales (such as `yourstore.com/en-ca/old-page` to `yourstore.com/en-fr/new-page`), then you can create individual redirects for each subfolder. 301 redirects are cached by browsers and search engines. If you remove a redirect after customers have accessed it, then the redirect might continue to work in their browsers until the cache expires. You can use URL redirects with your online store's visibility settings to temporarily redirect customers from hidden content to active content. For example, if you have a `/collections/fall` collection that you want to temporarily hide during summer and redirect customers to `/collections/summer`, you can: 1. Set the fall collection's Online store visibility to "Hidden". 2. Create redirect from `/collections/fall` to `/collections/summer` 3. When the fall collection is hidden, the URL becomes a 404 page which allows the redirect to work. **Important:** If you later make the fall collection Visible again, **the redirect will stop working** because redirects only work on 404 URLs. **Also works for products:** Set products to Draft status or remove from sales channels to make them eligible for redirects. ## Tips for effective 301 redirects **Redirect from**: Always use internal paths only (e.g., `/old-product`). Don't include your domain name. **Redirect to**: Use internal paths for pages on your store (e.g., `/new-product`), or full URLs with `https://` for external sites (e.g., `https://example.com`). After saving, visit the old URL in your browser to verify it redirects to the correct destination. See [redirects troubleshoot guide](/redirect-pro/help/redirect-issues/redirect-not-saving) for testing guidance. While Redirect Pro supports unlimited visits to each 301 redirect, Shopify has platform limits: * **Standard stores:** 100,000 redirects maximum * **Shopify Plus stores:** 20,000,000 redirects maximum Keep track of your total redirect count to avoid hitting these limits. ## What happens next Once saved, your 301 redirect: * **Takes effect immediately** - visitors are redirected right away * **Preserves SEO** - search engines transfer ranking signals to the new URL * **Handles unlimited visits** - 301 redirect visits don't count toward your usage quota * **Appears in your redirect list** - you can edit or delete it anytime ## Related guides * [Import redirects in bulk](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/import-301-redirects) - Upload multiple redirects from a `.csv` spreadsheet * [Edit or delete 301 redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/edit-delete-301-redirects) - Modify existing redirects * [Understanding redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-overview) - Learn about pattern-based redirect automations ## Need help? From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **URL Redirects** in the app navigation menu. Locate the redirect you want to edit in the table. You can use the [search feature](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/search-filter-301-redirects) to find it quickly. Click the "Redirect from" or "Redirect to" URL of the redirect. This will take you to the editing page. Update the redirect details: * **Redirect from**: Change the source URL * **Redirect to**: Change the destination URL Click **Save** in the Shopify save bar at the top of the page. The updated redirect takes effect immediately. To edit redirects in bulk we recommend [using an import](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/import-301-redirects). ## Delete a redirect Remove a redirect when it's no longer needed or if it's causing conflicts. From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **URL Redirects** in the app navigation menu. Check the boxes next to the redirects you want to remove. You can select one or multiple redirects. Click the **Delete** button that appears in the actions menu above the table on the right. In the confirmation modal, click **Delete** to permanently remove the selected redirects. **Deletion is permanent** - deleted redirects cannot be recovered. Visitors will start receiving 404 errors if they access the old URL after the redirect is deleted. ## Delete multiple redirects To delete many redirects at once: 1. **Select redirects**: Check the boxes next to redirects you want to remove 2. **Click Delete**: Use the **Delete** button in the actions menu 3. **Confirm**: Click **Delete** in the confirmation modal If you're deleting a large number of redirects (100+), the process may take a few minutes to complete. You can continue working and we'll send you an email when it's done. ## Tips for managing redirects After making changes, visit the old URL in your browser to verify the redirect works correctly and points to the right destination. Review your redirect list periodically (quarterly or during major site updates) and remove any that are no longer needed. Never create a redirect that points back to itself or creates a circular chain (A→B→C→A). This will break your site navigation. ## What happens after editing or deleting **After editing:** * Changes take effect immediately * Visitors will be redirected to the new destination * SEO signals transfer to the updated URL * The redirect appears updated in your redirect list **After deleting:** * The redirect is removed immediately * Visitors get a 404 error if they access the old URL * The redirect is permanently removed from your list * [Broken link tracking](/redirect-pro/guides/tracking-broken-links/how-broken-link-tracking-works) will detect visits to the deleted "Redirect from" URL ## Related guides * [Create a redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) - Add new redirects * [Search and filter redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/search-filter-301-redirects) - Find specific redirects to edit * [View tracked broken links](/redirect-pro/guides/tracking-broken-links/managing-broken-links) - See 404s from deleted redirects ## Need help? If your redirect isn't working after editing, see our troubleshooting guide: * [301 redirect not working](/redirect-pro/help/redirect-issues/redirect-not-working) - Common redirect issues # Import 301 redirects in bulk Source: https://docs.scayla.io/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/import-301-redirects If you're migrating to Shopify or need to create several 301 redirects, save time by importing your URL redirects in bulk using a CSV spreadsheet. ## When to use bulk import Import redirects when you: * **Migrate from another platform** - preserve SEO from your old site * **Restructure your site** - change multiple URLs at once * **Fix multiple broken links** - create many redirects quickly All plans include unlimited 301 redirect visits and bulk import functionality. ## Prepare your CSV file Download a copy of our [spreadsheet template](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WjPgXRC3c1XXkzrksNq5DXDbSRtxzPjPqWLtjhALTXo/edit?usp=sharing) to make sure you have the right column headers. ### Required file format Your import file must be a **CSV (Comma-Separated Values)** file with exactly two columns: 1. **Column 1**: Redirect from (old URL) 2. **Column 2**: Redirect to (new URL) **Remember to include column headers** - the CSV should have "Redirect from" and "Redirect to" in the first row. ### CSV import file example | Redirect from | Redirect to | | ------------------- | --------------------- | | /old-product | /products/new-product | | /blog/old-post | /blogs/news/new-post | | /pages/about-us-old | /pages/about | ### URL format guidelines **Redirect from (Column A):** * Use URL paths only: `/old-page` ✓ * Can include query parameters: `/old-page?id=123` ✓ * Don't include domain: `https://yourstore.com/old-page` ✗ **Redirect to (Column B):** * Internal pages: `/products/shirt` ✓ * External URLs: `https://example.com` ✓ (must include full URL with https\://) * Homepage: `/` ✓ Use lowercase letters and hyphens in URL paths. Avoid spaces, uppercase letters, or special characters. ## Import your redirects From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **Import redirects** in the app navigation menu. Click the **Import redirects** button. Enter a **name** for your import file so you can find it later. Click **Add file** and select your prepared .csv file from your computer. Download a copy of our [spreadsheet template](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WjPgXRC3c1XXkzrksNq5DXDbSRtxzPjPqWLtjhALTXo/edit?usp=sharing) to make sure you have the right column headers. Click **Save** in the Shopify search bar at the top of the page to begin the import. Large imports may take a few minutes to process and will appear on the **Import redirects** page when complete. ## What happens after import When processing completes, Shopify sends an **Import URL Redirect Summary** email to your store's admin email address showing: * **Created** - New redirects successfully added * **Updated** - Existing redirects that were modified (when a "Redirect from" URL already existed) * **Errors** - Failed redirects with the error message and CSV row number Successful redirects are active immediately. Failed redirects must be corrected in your CSV and re-imported - the email tells you exactly what went wrong and on which line. If importing a large number of redirects (1,000+), the process may take several minutes. You can continue working and you'll receive an email when it's complete. ## Common reasons files are rejected If your file won't upload, check for these issues: Your file must be saved as **.csv** (Comma-Separated Values). **Not accepted:** * Excel files (`.xls`, `.xlsx`) * Tab-separated values (`.tsv`) * CSV files using semicolons, tabs, or pipes as delimiters **How to fix**: In Excel or Google Sheets, use **File > Save As** and choose **CSV (Comma delimited)** as the file type. The first row must contain exactly these headers in these cells: * Cell A1: `Redirect from` * Cell B1: `Redirect to` **Incorrect**: ```csv theme={null} Old URL,New URL /old-page,/new-page ``` **Correct**: ```csv theme={null} Redirect from,Redirect to /old-page,/new-page ``` Headers are **case-sensitive** and must match exactly. Each row must have exactly two columns separated by one comma. **Incorrect**: `/old-page,/new-page,extra-column` ✗ **Correct**: `/old-page,/new-page` ✓ Remove any blank rows and trim extra spaces around URLs. **Incorrect**: `/old-page , /new-page` ✗ **Correct**: `/old-page,/new-page` ✓ If your file is rejected, the error message will tell you which specific issue was found. Fix the issue and try uploading again. ## Handling import errors If some redirects fail to import, the **Import URL Redirect Summary** email you receive from Shopify will contain: * The line number where the error occurred * The specific error * The redirect that failed See [Redirects failed to import](/redirect-pro/help/redirect-issues/redirects-failed-to-import) for troubleshooting. ## Tips for successful imports Before importing thousands of redirects, test with a small CSV file (10-20 redirects) to verify your formatting is correct. Save a copy of your original CSV file before importing. This helps if you need to troubleshoot or re-import later. For imports over 10,000 redirects, split your CSV into multiple files and import them separately. Check that all URLs in your file are formatted correctly before importing to minimize errors. ## After importing Once your redirects are imported: * Test a few sample redirects to ensure they work correctly * Review your redirect list to verify all expected redirects were created ## Related guides * [Create a redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) - Add individual redirects manually * [Edit or delete redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/edit-delete-301-redirects) - Manage imported redirects * [Search and filter redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/search-filter-301-redirects) - Find imported redirects ## Need help? From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **URL Redirects** in the app navigation menu. Click on the **search bar** at the top of the redirects table. Type any part of the URL you're looking for. The table will filter dynamically as you type. The search looks in both: * **Redirect from** URLs (old URLs) * **Redirect to** URLs (destination URLs) ## What you can do after searching Once you've found the redirects you're looking for: * **Edit individual redirects** - Click the redirect in the table * **Delete specific redirects** - Select them and click Delete * **Review redirect details** - Check the "Redirect from" and "Redirect to" URLs ## Related guides * [Edit or delete redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/edit-delete-301-redirects) - Manage found redirects * [Import redirects in bulk](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/import-301-redirects) - Add many redirects at once ## Need help? When a visitor accesses a URL that doesn't exist on your store, they see a 404 error page. Redirect Pro tracks these visits and records: * The broken URL they tried to access * When it was accessed * How many times it's been accessed * Whether it's been fixed with a redirect This helps you identify which broken links need attention and create redirects to fix them. ## Why broken link tracking matters **SEO impact:** Broken links harm your search rankings. Fixing these 404 with redirects transfers search engine link equity from the old URL to the new one and maintains your store's SEO health. **Customer experience:** Visitors get frustrated by broken links, leading to lost sales and poor brand impression. When product or collection links don't work, customers leave instead of making purchases. Broken link tracking helps you find problems - [redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) and [redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-overview) fix them. ## How it works A customer clicks a link or enters a URL that doesn't exist on your store (e.g., `/products/deleted-item`). Your store shows a 404 error page because the URL doesn't exist. The app records the broken URL, timestamp, and increments the visit count if it's been seen before. View your tracked broken links and create redirects to send visitors to the right pages. ## What gets tracked Broken link tracking captures **actual customer visits to 404 error pages**. This means it only tracks broken links when visitors access them - it doesn't crawl your site or analyze internal links like Google Search Console. **Why this approach matters:** * **Minimizes noise** - you only see broken links that are actually disrupting customer journeys * **Focuses on real impact** - prioritizes URLs customers are trying to access, not hypothetical broken links * **Reduces quota usage** - only counts genuine visitor activity **Tracked:** * ✓ Visits to deleted products, collections, pages, or blog posts * ✓ Broken URLs from old marketing campaigns or email links * ✓ Mistyped URLs **Not tracked:** * ✗ Internal broken links on your site (until a customer visits them) * ✗ URLs already covered by 301 redirects (they redirect successfully) * ✗ URLs covered by redirect rules (these appear in [rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) for Enterprise plan users instead) * ✗ URLs that lead to active pages (no 404 error) * ✗ Server errors (500 errors, technical issues) **Table may be empty initially**: The broken links table populates only as customers visit 404 pages. If you've just set up the app or haven't had broken link visits yet, the table will be empty. You can test by visiting a non-existent URL on your store to verify tracking is working. ## Quota usage Each broken link visit counts toward your monthly **tracked visits quota**. This includes: * 404 page visits (broken links) * Redirect rule activations **Does NOT count:** * 301 redirect visits (unlimited on all plans) See [Understanding usage quotas](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/usage-quotas) for details on quota limits. Once you create a 301 redirect for a broken link, future visits to that URL won't count toward your quota anymore - they become unlimited 301 visits. ## Requirements Broken link tracking requires the **app embed to be activated** in your theme. ### Check if app embed is active From your Shopify admin, navigate to **Online Store → Themes**. Click the **Customize** button next to your active theme. In the theme editor, click the **App embeds** icon in the left sidebar (puzzle piece icon). Look for **Redirect Pro** in the list of app embeds. Make sure the toggle next to **Redirect Pro** is turned **ON** (green). If the toggle is OFF, broken link tracking won't work. Turn it on and save your theme. Click **Save** in the top right corner of the theme editor. Redirect Pro also has a helpful 'App status' card on the homepage which will show you whether the app embed is on or off. ## Most common issues If broken link tracking isn't working, check these three things: **1. App embed not activated:** The app embed must be turned on in your theme editor (see steps above). This is the most common reason tracking doesn't work. **2. Usage quota reached:** If you've hit your monthly tracked visits limit, broken link tracking pauses until your quota resets or you upgrade. You can check your usage on the Settings page. **3. No visits yet:** The broken links table only populates when customers visit 404 pages. If you haven't had any broken link visits, the table will be empty. **Test it:** Visit a non-existent URL on your store (e.g., `yourstore.com/test-404`) and check if it appears in the broken links table after a few minutes. For detailed troubleshooting, see [Broken link tracking not working](/redirect-pro/help/broken-link-issues/broken-link-tracking-not-working). ## Best practices Check your broken links regularly (weekly or bi-weekly) to catch issues early before they impact too many visitors. Fix broken links with the highest visit counts first - these are affecting the most customers. Don't let broken links accumulate. Create redirects as soon as you identify important broken URLs. If you see many similar broken links (e.g., `/old-products/...`), create a redirect rule instead of individual redirects. After deleting products, changing URL structures, or updating collections, watch for new broken links that need fixing. ## What happens when quota is reached If you reach your monthly tracked visits quota: * **Broken link tracking pauses** - new 404 visits aren't recorded * **Existing data remains** - you can still view and redirect previously tracked broken links * **Redirects still work** - 301 redirects continue functioning (unlimited) * **Redirect rules pause** - pattern-based redirects stop until quota resets Options when quota is reached: * Wait until next month when quota resets * [Upgrade your plan](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription) for more tracked visits ## Next steps View, fix, and organize your broken links Fix broken links with 301 redirects Learn about tracked visits limits Fix multiple similar broken links at once ## Related guides * [Manage broken links](/redirect-pro/guides/tracking-broken-links/managing-broken-links) - View and fix your 404 errors * [Create a redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) - Set up 301 redirects * [Understanding redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-overview) - Fix pattern-based broken links * [Understanding usage quotas](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/usage-quotas) - Learn about quota limits ## Need help? From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **Broken links** in the app navigation menu. The table shows: * **Broken link**: The 404 URL visitors tried to access * **Visits**: How many times this URL was visited by customers * **Last visited at**: Most recent visit timestamp ## Understanding the broken links table Broken links are organized into tabs based on their status: **Unresolved** (default tab): * New broken links that haven't been addressed * Highest priority - these need redirects or decisions **Hidden**: * Broken links you've dismissed as irrelevant * Keeps your "For review" list clean Hiding broken links is purely for visual organization. Redirect Pro will continue to detect visits - they just won't clutter your "Unresolved" list. ## Create redirects from broken links Turn broken 404 errors into working redirects. ### Create a single redirect Locate the 404 URL you want to fix in the "Unresolved" or "Hidden" tab. Select the broken link you want to redirect. For faster bulk creation you can select and redirect multiple broken links to the same destination at once. Click **Create redirect** from the actions menu at the top of the table. In the form that appears: * **Redirect to**: Enter the URL where visitors should be sent Common destinations: * Similar product: `/products/similar-item` * Related collection: `/collections/category` * Homepage: `/` Click **Redirect**. The broken link will be removed from the table, the redirect will appear in your URL Redirects list and future visitors will be redirected. ## Hide or delete irrelevant broken links Clean up your "Unresolved" list by removing broken links you don't need to fix. Check the boxes next to URLs like: * Test URLs or spam from bots * Low-traffic URLs (1-2 visits) that aren't important * Typos with no clear redirect destination * **Hide**: Moves to "Hidden" tab for reference * **Delete**: Removes entirely from the app The broken links are removed from your "For review" queue. Both hiding and deleting only organize your list - they don't stop tracking. If you delete a broken link and a visitor accesses the URL again, it will reappear in "Unresolved" and count toward your quota. ## Filter broken links ### Search for specific URLs Use the search bar to find: * Specific product handles or collection names * URLs from particular sections (e.g., `/blog/`) * Patterns you're investigating ## Best practices When you see new broken links with high visit counts, create redirects within 48 hours to minimize SEO and customer experience impact. Don't always redirect to homepage. Send visitors to: * Similar products (same category, style, or price range) * Parent collections (for deleted products) * Related content (for blog posts or pages) * Category pages (for deleted collections) If you see many broken links with similar structures (e.g., `/old-blog/...`), create a [redirect rule](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/create-redirect-rule) instead of individual redirects. Only hide genuinely irrelevant URLs. When in doubt, create a redirect - even low-traffic broken links can impact SEO. ## Quota and tracking **Broken link visits count toward your quota:** Each 404 visit is tracked and counts as a "tracked visit" in your monthly allowance. **After creating a redirect:** * The broken link moves to your URL redirects list * Future visits to that URL are 301 redirects (unlimited) * Those visits no longer count toward your quota **If quota is reached:** * New broken links and visits to existing broken links won't be tracked until quota resets * Existing broken links data remains visible See [Understanding usage quotas](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/usage-quotas) for details. ## Related guides * [How broken link tracking works](/redirect-pro/guides/tracking-broken-links/how-broken-link-tracking-works) - Understand how 404s are detected * [Create a redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) - Learn about 301 redirects * [Import redirects in bulk](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/import-301-redirects) - Create many redirects at once * [Understanding redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-overview) - Fix pattern-based broken links ## Need help? Live redirects work on active pages but don't provide SEO benefits. ## When to use live redirects Use live redirects when you want to redirect visitors away from a page that is still active on your store. For example: * Sending search query visitors to a relevant collection page * Redirecting an active product page to a newer replacement * Sending blog readers to a related collection **Live redirects don't help with SEO.** They use JavaScript in the browser, which search engines can't follow. If the page is broken (404), use a [301 redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) instead for SEO benefits. ## Supported page types Live redirects work on the following active page types: products, collections, pages, blogs, articles, list collections, and search. ## Create a live redirect From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **URL Redirects** in the app navigation menu. Click the **Create live redirect** button in the page header. This button is available regardless of which tab (301 redirects or Live redirects) you have selected. In the form that appears: * **Redirect from**: The URL you want to redirect visitors away from. Use an active page on your store. * **Redirect to**: Enter the URL where you want visitors to go. Enter an active URL on your store. Live redirects only work on pages that load successfully — not on 404 error pages. For the "Redirect from" field, enter only the URL path (e.g., `/pages/old-page`), not the full domain. For the "Redirect to" field, use a path for internal pages or a full URL with `https://` for external sites. Click **Save**. The live redirect is now active and will start sending visitors from the source page to the destination. ## Redirect from options The "Redirect from" field only accepts **internal URL paths** (e.g., `/pages/old-page`) from your store, and not full URLs (e.g., `https://yourstore.com/pages/old-page`). * **Reserved paths**: `/collections/vendors`, `/collections/types`, `/a/`, `/community/`, `/tools/` * You can't redirect MyShopify domain paths ending `/shop` or `/services` These are Shopify platform restrictions that apply to all redirect types, not just live redirects. ## Redirect to options The "Redirect to" field accepts both internal paths and external URLs: **Internal pages** (use path only): * `/collections/new-arrivals` * `/products/blue-shirt` * `/` (homepage) **External URLs** (use full URL with `https://`): * `https://example.com` * `https://blog.yourcompany.com/article` ## Field validations When creating a live redirect, the following validations apply: * **Redirect from** must start with `/` * **Redirect from** must be an **active page** * **Redirect from** cannot use Shopify restricted paths * **Redirect from** cannot equal **Redirect to** (prevents redirect loops) * **Redirect to** must start with `/` (for internal redirects) or `https://` (for external redirects) ## What happens after saving Once saved, your live redirect: * **Takes effect immediately** — visitors to the source page are redirected right away * **Counts toward your quota** — each unique visit to the redirected page counts toward your monthly tracked visits * **Has no SEO impact** — search engines won't follow JavaScript redirects * **Appears in your Live redirects tab** — you can edit or delete it anytime from the URL Redirects page ## Related guides * [Understanding live redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/live-redirects-overview) — Learn how live redirects work * [Edit or delete live redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/edit-delete-live-redirects) — Modify existing live redirects * [Create a 301 redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) — For broken pages that need SEO benefits ## Need help? Click the **Live redirects** tab to view your live redirects. Click the live redirect you want to edit. Modify the **Redirect from** or **Redirect to** fields as needed. Click **Save** to apply the updated live redirect. ## What happens after editing * Changes take effect immediately * Visitors to the updated "Redirect from" URL are sent to the new destination * If you changed the "Redirect from" URL, visitors to the old source URL will no longer be redirected ## Delete live redirects ### Delete a single live redirect From the Redirect Pro app, click **URL redirects** in the navigation menu. Click the **Live redirects** tab to view your live redirects. Click the live redirect you want to delete. Click the **Delete** button and confirm the deletion. ### Delete multiple live redirects From the Redirect Pro app, click **URL Redirects** in the navigation menu. Click the **Live redirects** tab to view your live redirects. Use the checkboxes to select the live redirects you want to delete. Click the **Delete** button that appears and confirm the bulk deletion. **Deletion is permanent.** Deleted live redirects cannot be recovered. Visitors to the source URL will no longer be redirected and will see the original page as normal. ## What happens after deleting * The live redirect stops working immediately * Visitors to the source URL will see the original active page as normal * The deletion does not affect the source or destination pages themselves ## Tips for managing live redirects After making changes, visit the "Redirect from" URL in an incognito browser window to verify the redirect works correctly. If you later remove or unpublish the page that had a live redirect, delete the live redirect and create a [301 redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) instead. This gives you SEO benefits and unlimited visits. ## Related guides * [Create a live redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/create-live-redirect) — Add new live redirects * [Understanding live redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/live-redirects-overview) — Learn how live redirects work * [Create a 301 redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) — For broken pages that need SEO benefits # Understanding live redirects Source: https://docs.scayla.io/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/live-redirects-overview Live redirects let you redirect visitors away from active pages on your store. They work using JavaScript in the browser and don't provide SEO benefits. ## What are live redirects? Live redirects send visitors from one active page on your store to another URL. Unlike [301 redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect), which only work on broken pages that return a 404 error, live redirects work on pages that are still live and accessible. **Live redirects do not provide SEO benefits.** They use JavaScript running in the visitor's browser to perform the redirect, which search engines cannot follow. If you need to preserve SEO rankings, use a [301 redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) instead. ## When to use live redirects Use live redirects when you want to send visitors away from a page that must remain active on your store. For example: * **Search results to collections**: Redirect a search query page (e.g., `/search?q=adidas`) to a relevant collection page (e.g., `/collections/adidas`) **Don't use live redirects for broken or removed pages.** If the page returns a 404 error, use a [301 redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) instead to get SEO benefits. ## Supported page types Live redirects work on the following active page types: * Products * Collections * Pages * Blogs * Articles * List collections * Search ## How live redirects work Live redirects use JavaScript that runs in the visitor's browser when they visit a matching page. Here's what happens: 1. A visitor navigates to an active page on your store 2. The page loads in their browser 3. Redirect Pro's JavaScript detects the URL matches a live redirect 4. The visitor is automatically sent to the destination URL Because the page loads before the redirect happens, visitors may see a brief flash of the original page before being redirected. This is normal behavior for JavaScript-based redirects. ## Live redirects vs. 301 redirects Live redirects and 301 redirects serve different purposes and work in fundamentally different ways. Choosing the right type depends on whether the page you want to redirect from is active or broken. **301 redirects** are server-side, permanent redirects that only work on broken pages (404 errors). When a visitor or search engine requests a broken URL, the server responds with a 301 status code before any page loads. This tells search engines to transfer ranking signals to the new URL, making 301 redirects the best choice for SEO. They redirect instantly with no visible delay, and visits don't count toward your usage quota. **Live redirects** are JavaScript-based redirects that only work on active pages. They run in the visitor's browser after the page has loaded, which means search engines cannot follow them. Live redirects have no SEO benefits and may show a brief flash of the original page before redirecting. Each unique visit to a page with a live redirect counts toward your monthly usage quota. | Feature | 301 Redirects | Live Redirects | | ---------------------- | ------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- | | **Works on** | Broken pages (404 errors) | Active pages | | **SEO benefits** | Yes (transfers ranking signals) | No | | **How it works** | Server-side (before page loads) | JavaScript in browser (after page loads) | | **Speed** | Instant | Brief delay (page loads first) | | **Quota usage** | Unlimited (doesn't count) | Counts toward monthly tracked visits | | **App embed required** | No | Yes | **Rule of thumb:** If the page is broken (404), use a 301 redirect. If the page is active and must stay active, use a live redirect. ## Requirements **App embed must be active**: Live redirects require the Redirect Pro app embed to be enabled in your Shopify theme. This is the same app embed used for broken link tracking and redirect rules. To check if the app embed is active: 1. Shopify admin → **Online Store → Themes** 2. Click **Edit theme** on your live theme 3. Click the **App embeds** icon in the left sidebar menu 4. Find **Redirect Pro** and ensure the toggle is **ON** 5. Click **Save** ## Quota usage Each unique visit to a page redirected by a live redirect counts toward your monthly tracked visits quota. This is similar to how redirect rule activations count toward your quota. [Learn more about usage quotas](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/usage-quotas) If you're approaching your quota limit frequently, consider whether any of your live redirects could be replaced with 301 redirects. If the page no longer needs to stay active, delete or unpublish it and create a 301 redirect instead for unlimited visits and SEO benefits. ## Best practices Live redirects should only be used when the page must remain active. If you can remove or unpublish the page, use a 301 redirect instead for better SEO and no quota usage. Visit the page in an incognito browser window to verify the redirect works correctly and sends visitors to the right destination. Each unique live redirect visit counts toward your monthly quota. Check your usage regularly on the Settings page if you have high-traffic live redirects. Make sure the "Redirect to" URL is correct and the destination page exists. Redirecting visitors to a broken page creates a poor experience. ## Next steps Set up your first live redirect Manage existing live redirects ## Related guides * [Create a 301 redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) — For broken pages that need SEO benefits * [Understanding redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-overview) — Pattern-based redirects for multiple 404 URLs * [Understanding usage quotas](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/usage-quotas) — Learn about tracked visits limits ## Need help? If your live redirect isn't working as expected, see our troubleshooting guide: * [Live redirect not working](/redirect-pro/help/live-redirect-issues/live-redirect-not-working) — Common issues and fixes # Create a redirect rule Source: https://docs.scayla.io/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/create-redirect-rule ## Choose your approach You can create redirect rules in two ways: **Create from template** - Use pre-built patterns for common scenarios (quickest option) **Create custom rule** - Build your own pattern with wildcard tokens (most flexible) Not sure which to use? Start with templates - they cover most common use cases. Use custom rules only when you need specific URL matching that templates don't provide. ## Create a redirect rule From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **Redirect rules** in the app navigation menu. Click the **Create redirect rule** button. You can click **Use template** to start from the most common use cases, or enter a custom **Redirect from** URL. Use a least one wildcard token: * Use `⑴` to match any characters * Example: `/products/⑴` matches `/products/shoes` Start broad (e.g., `/products/⑴`) then narrow down if needed. Test with specific URLs to verify your pattern works. In the **Redirect to** field, specify where matched URLs should go: * Use fixed paths: `/new-path/page`, or, * Use wildcard tokens to create flexible destination URLs based on the visited **Redirect from** URL: `/new-path/⑴` Click **Save** in the contextual save bar at the top of the page. The redirect rule is now active and will start redirecting relevant traffic immediately. ## Understanding wildcard tokens ### Wildcard tokens: `⑴` `⑵` `⑶` `⑷` `⑸` Wildcard tokens match any set characters in a URL **between two forward slashes**. You can use up to 5 tokens per rule, numbered `⑴` through `⑸`. **Examples:** | Pattern | Matches | Doesn't Match | | -------------- | ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ | | `/old/⑴` | `/old/page`
`/old/anything` | `/new/page`
`/old` (no trailing path) | | `/blog/⑴/post` | `/blog/2024/post`
`/blog/news/post` | `/blog/post`
`/blog/2024/article` | | `/⑴-sale` | `/winter-sale`
`/summer-sale` | `/sale`
`/discounts` | ### Reusing tokens in the destination Wildcard tokens capture text from the matched URL and can be reused in the redirect destination. **Single token example:** **Rule:** * Match: `/products-old/⑴` * Redirect to: `/products/⑴` **Result:** * `/products-old/shirt` → `/products/shirt` * `/products-old/blue-jeans` → `/products/blue-jeans` **Multiple tokens example:** **Rule:** * Match: `/blog/⑴/category/⑵` * Redirect to: `/news/⑴/⑵` **Result:** * `/blog/2024/category/updates` → `/news/2024/updates` * `⑴` captures "2024", `⑵` captures "updates" ## Common redirect rules **Scenario**: Unpublished or deleted products URLs to the all products page. **Rule**: * Redirect from: `/products/⑴` * Redirect to: `/collections/all` **Scenario**: Unpublished or deleted collection paths to the all products page. **Rule**: * Redirect from: `/collections/⑴` * Redirect to: `/collections/all` **Scenario**: Moved from `/en/page` structure to `/page` **Rule**: * Redirect from: `/en/⑴` * Redirect to: `/⑴` ## Rule matching behavior **Important things to know:** * **301s take priority** - If a URL matches both a rule and a 301 redirect, the 301 will be used * **5 token maximum** - You can use tokens `⑴` `⑵` `⑶` `⑷` `⑸` (no more than 5 per rule) Always test your redirect rule after creation to ensure it matches the URLs you expect. See [Test redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/test-redirect-rules). ## After creating a rule Once your redirect rule is saved: **Immediate effects:** * Rule starts matching URLs right away * Visitors are redirected automatically * Each activation counts toward your monthly tracked visits quota **Things to monitor:** * Test with sample URLs to verify correct matching * Check [rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) (Enterprise) to see actual triggered URLs * Monitor your [usage quota](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/usage-quotas) if you expect high traffic ## Troubleshooting **Rule not redirecting?** Check these common issues: * **App embed disabled**: Redirect rules require the app embed to be activated in your theme editor. Go to **Theme Editor → App Embeds** and enable Redirect Pro. * **Quota limit reached**: If you've used your monthly tracked visits, redirect rules pause until your quota resets. Check usage on the Settings page or [upgrade your plan](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription). * **Pattern mismatch**: Verify your test URL matches the URL structure from your rule. See [Redirect rule not working](/redirect-pro/help/redirect-rule-issues/redirect-rule-not-working). ## Related guides * [Understanding redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-overview) - Learn how rules work * [Test redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/test-redirect-rules) - Verify your rules * [Edit or delete redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/edit-delete-redirect-rules) - Manage rules * [View and manage rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) - See triggered URLs (Enterprise) ## Need help? From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **Redirect rules** in the app navigation menu. Locate the redirect rule you want to edit in the table and click either the **Redirect from** or **Redirect to** URL. This will open the editing page. Update the rule details: * **Redirect from**: The URL pattern that 404s should match * **Redirect to**: The destination URL Click **Save** in the contextual save bar at the top of the page. The updated rule takes effect immediately. ## Delete a redirect rule Remove a rule when it's no longer needed. From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **Redirect rules** in the app navigation menu. Check the box next to the redirect rule you want to remove. You can select more than one to delete in bulk. Click the **Delete** button in the actions menu above the table. Click **Delete** in the confirmation modal to permanently remove the rule. **Deletion is permanent** - once deleted, the rule stops matching URLs immediately. Visitors will get 404 errors if they access URLs that were being redirected by the rule. ## Tips for managing redirect rules Always test the updated rule with sample URLs to verify it works as expected. See [Test redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/test-redirect-rules). After editing, check your [analytics](/redirect-pro/guides/monitoring-performance/analytics-overview) and the visits count in the table of redirect rules to see how much traffic the rule is capturing. If specific URL visits in your redirect rule get consistent traffic, use [rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) on the Enterprise plan to see and [convert these matches to permanent 301 redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) for SEO benefits and unlimited visits. ## What happens after editing **After editing:** * Changes take effect immediately * All URLs that match the new pattern are redirected * URLs that matched the old pattern but not the new one will get 404 errors * Visits to the rule continue counting toward your usage quota **After deleting:** * The rule stops matching URLs instantly * Visitors get 404 errors when accessing previously matched URLs * [Broken link tracking](/redirect-pro/guides/tracking-broken-links/how-broken-link-tracking-works) will detect these 404s * The rule is permanently removed and cannot be recovered ## Editing template-based rules If you created a rule from a template, you can still edit it: 1. The template only provides the initial pattern 2. Once created, the rule behaves like any custom rule 3. You can edit both the **Redirect from** and **Redirect to** URLs ## Related guides * [Create a redirect rule](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/create-redirect-rule) - Set up new rules * [Test redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/test-redirect-rules) - Verify edited rules work * [View and manage rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) - See which URL visits match your rule (Enterprise) * [Understanding redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-overview) - Learn how rules work ## Need help? This prevents 404 errors and maintains a good customer experience. ## What happens when you close a market When you discontinue a Shopify market: * Market-specific URLs (e.g., `/en-us/products/shirt`) stop working * Visitors get 404 errors when accessing these URLs * You lose potential customers who land on broken pages Redirect rules solve this by automatically redirecting market URLs to equivalent pages on your primary store. ## Common market URL patterns Shopify markets typically use these URL structures: **Subdomain-based:** * `us.yourstore.com/products/shirt` * `uk.yourstore.com/collections/sale` **Path-based:** * `yourstore.com/en-us/products/shirt` * `yourstore.com/en-gb/collections/sale` Redirect rules work for **path-based** market URLs. For subdomain-based markets, you'll need to configure redirects at your domain DNS level. ## Create a market redirect rule Before creating the rule, determine the pattern used by your discontinued market. **Example:** * `/en-us/*` (US market with English locale) From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **Redirect rules** in the app navigation menu. Click the **Create redirect rule** button. In the **Redirect from** field, enter the market URL pattern using wildcards. **Example for US market**: `/en-us/products/⑴` This matches all URLs that start with `/en-us/products/` In the **Redirect to** field, specify where to send visitors. **Example 1 - Preserve the path**: `/products/⑴` (sends `/en-us/products/shirt` → `/products/shirt`) **Example 2 - Send to homepage**: `/` (sends all market URLs to homepage) Click **Save** in the contextual save bar at the top of the page. The redirect rule is now active for the discontinued market. You can create additional rules to capture other patterns like collection pages and blog posts. ## Redirect pattern examples ### Single market, broad pattern **Scenario**: US market used `/en-us/` prefix. One rule captures all paths (products, collections, pages, etc.). **Rule:** * Redirect from: `/en-us/⑴/⑵` * Redirect to: `/⑴/⑵` **Result:** * `/en-us/products/shirt` → `/products/shirt` * `/en-us/collections/sale` → `/collections/sale` * `/en-us/pages/about` → `/pages/about` **Pros**: One rule handles everything\ **Cons**: Harder to track analytics by content type ### Single market, specific patterns **Scenario**: US market used `/en-us/` prefix. Create separate rules for products, collections, etc. **Rule 1 (Products):** * Redirect from: `/en-us/products/⑴` * Redirect to: `/products/⑴` **Rule 2 (Collections):** * Redirect from: `/en-us/collections/⑴` * Redirect to: `/collections/⑴` **Rule 3 (Pages):** * Redirect from: `/en-us/pages/⑴` * Redirect to: `/pages/⑴` **Pros**: Easier to track analytics per content type\ **Cons**: More rules to manage **Recommended approach**: Use specific patterns (separate rules for products, collections, etc.) for better analytics and easier troubleshooting. You can see exactly which content types are getting traffic. ### Multiple markets, one rule per market **Scenario**: Closed US and Canada markets with `/en-us/` and `/en-ca/` prefixes. **Rule 1 (US market):** * Redirect from: `/en-us/⑴/⑵` * Redirect to: `/⑴/⑵` **Rule 2 (Canada market):** * Redirect from: `/en-ca/⑴/⑵` * Redirect to: `/⑴/⑵` While you could use a wildcard token to replace `en-us` for multiple market closures, this rule would be very broad and pick up other 404 pages accidentally. ### Redirect to subdomain or secondary domain **Scenario**: US market moved from `/en-us/` path to `us.yourstore.com` subdomain. **Rule:** * Redirect from: `/en-us/⑴/⑵` * Redirect to: `https://us.yourstore.com/⑴/⑵` **Result:** * `/en-us/products/shirt` → `https://us.yourstore.com/products/shirt` Or redirect to a completely different domain: **Rule:** * Redirect from: `/en-us/⑴/⑵` * Redirect to: `https://us-store.com/⑴/⑵` When redirecting to external domains or subdomains, always include the full URL with `https://` in the "Redirect to" field. See [Test redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/test-redirect-rules) for detailed testing guidance. ## After discontinuing the market Once the market is closed and your rules are live, **Enterprise users** can optimize their redirects: [View rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) to see which discontinued market URLs are getting high traffic, then [convert high-traffic URLs to 301 redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) for SEO benefits and faster redirects. ## Related guides * [Create a redirect rule](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/create-redirect-rule) - Detailed rule creation steps * [Test redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/test-redirect-rules) - Verify market redirects work * [View and manage rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) - Monitor market redirect usage (Enterprise) * [Convert matches to permanent redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) - Optimize high-traffic market URLs ## Need help? Instead of creating individual redirects for each URL, one rule can handle hundreds or thousands of redirects. ## What are redirect rules? Redirect rules are pattern-based redirects that match groups of 404 URLs using wildcard variables. When a visitor accesses a URL matching your pattern, the rule automatically redirects them to your specified destination. Redirect rules only work on broken links that return a 404 error. They cannot redirect active pages. If you need to redirect visitors from an active page, use a [live redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/create-live-redirect) instead. **Example use case:** * You have 50 products with URLs like `/products-old/shirt`, `/products-old/pants`, `/products-old/jacket` * Instead of creating 50 individual 301 redirects * Create one redirect rule: `/products-old/*` → `/products/*` * This handles all 50 products with a single rule Redirect rules count toward your **tracked visits quota** each time they're activated. [301 redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) don't count toward quotas and are unlimited on all plans. ## Redirect rules vs. 301 redirects vs. live redirects | Feature | 301 Redirects | Redirect Rules | Live Redirects | | ---------------- | ------------------------- | ------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------ | | **Works on** | Broken pages (404 errors) | Broken pages (404 errors) | Active pages | | **Best for** | Specific individual URLs | Multiple similar URLs | Redirecting between active pages | | **Setup** | One redirect per URL | One rule for many URLs | One redirect per URL | | **Quota usage** | Unlimited (doesn't count) | Counts toward monthly tracked visits | Counts toward monthly tracked visits | | **SEO benefits** | Yes — permanent signal | No | No | | **Speed** | Instant (server-side) | Brief delay (JavaScript) | Brief delay (JavaScript) | **When to use each:** * Use **301 redirects** for permanent, high-traffic URL changes where the original page is broken (404) and you want SEO benefits * Use **redirect rules** for managing many broken URLs that follow a pattern * Use **[live redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/live-redirects-overview)** when you need to redirect visitors from an active page that must remain live ## Types of redirect rules ### Starting from a template Pre-built patterns for common redirect scenarios. Just select a template and customise the destination to your needs. **Available templates:** * **Products** - Redirect any broken product page to your homepage (`/`) * **Collections** - Redirect any broken collections page to the all collections page (`/collections`) * **Pages** - Redirect any broken page to your homepage (`/`) * **Blog** - Redirect any broken blog to the blogs homepage (`/blogs`) **When to use**: Quick setup for standard redirect patterns without writing custom rules. ### Custom rules Build your own pattern using wildcard tokens for complete control. **When to use**: Unique URL structures that don't match pre-built templates. ## How redirect rules work Redirect rules run JavaScript in the visitor's browser to send them to a new page. **They don't help with SEO** because search engines can't follow JavaScript redirects. **Want SEO benefits?** Use [301 redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) instead, or [convert rule matches to 301s](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) with the Enterprise plan. ### The two parts of a redirect rule **1. Redirect from (what URLs to redirect)** The pattern you're looking for, using wildcard tokens that match any text: * Use wildcard tokens: `⑴` `⑵` `⑶` `⑷` `⑸` (you can use up to 5) * Each token matches any characters * You must use at least one token in your "Redirect from" URL **Example**: `/category/⑴` matches `/category/shirts` **2. Redirect to (where to send them)** The destination URL. Include wildcard tokens to preserve parts of the original URL: * **Static redirect**: `/collections/all` (everyone goes to the same place) * **Dynamic redirect**: `/collections/⑴` (preserves the matched text) **Example**: Match `/category/⑴` and redirect to `/collections/⑴` * Visitor goes to: `/category/shirt` * Gets redirected to: `/collections/shirt` * The `⑴` captures "shirt" and reuses it ### Using multiple wildcard tokens **Match**: `/blog/⑴/posts/⑵`\ **Redirect to**: `/news/⑴/⑵` **Result**: `/blog/2024/posts/announcement` → `/news/2024/announcement` Each wildcard (`⑴`, `⑵`, `⑶`, etc.) captures a different piece in order and you can reuse them in the destination. ### Rule matching example **Redirect from**: `/categories/⑴` **Matches these URLs**: * `/categories/summer` ✓ * `/categories/winter-sale` ✓ * `/categories/anything-here` ✓ **Doesn't match**: * `/collections/summer` ✗ * `/products/shirt` ✗ ## Rule matches (Enterprise feature) Rule matches show the actual URLs visitors accessed that triggered your redirect rules. **What you can see:** * Real URLs that matched your rule * Where visitors were redirected to * How many times each URL was visited **What you can do:** * Review which "to" and "from" URL pairings are actually being visited * Convert high-traffic matches into permanent 301 redirects * Optimize your redirect strategy based on real data This feature is only available on the **Enterprise plan**. See [View and manage rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) for details. ## When to use redirect rules You're migrating to Shopify which changes your URL structures (e.g., `/product/` to `/products/`) and need to redirect hundreds of URLs at once. **Use redirect rules** to handle all URLs with a few rules instead of creating individual redirects. You're closing a market and need to redirect all country-specific URLs to your primary store. **Use redirect rules** with market-specific patterns. See [Use redirect rules for discontinued markets](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-markets). You're managing thousands of URLs that follow a predictable pattern. **Use redirect rules** to handle them efficiently with a single rule instead of thousands of 301s. ## Redirect rule best practices Templates are pre-tested patterns that cover common scenarios. Use them first before building custom rules. Always test your redirect rule with a few sample URLs to ensure it redirects correctly. See [Test redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/test-redirect-rules). Each time a rule is triggered, it counts toward your monthly tracked visits. Check your usage regularly if you have high-traffic redirect rules. If certain URLs in your rule get consistent traffic, Enterprise users can convert them into individual 301 redirects for better SEO and unlimited visits. Complex patterns with many wildcard tokens can be hard to maintain. If a rule becomes too complicated, consider breaking it into multiple simpler rules or using 301 redirects instead. ## Next steps Set up your first redirect rule Verify rules are working as expected Manage existing redirect rules See which 404 URLs triggered your rules ## Related guides * [Create a redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) - Set up permanent 301 redirects * [Understanding usage quotas](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/usage-quotas) - Learn about tracked visits limits * [Convert matches into permanent redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) - Optimize your redirect strategy ## Need help? After [creating a redirect rule](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/create-redirect-rule), test it to ensure the pattern matches the right URLs and redirects visitors to the correct destination. **Redirect rules only work on broken links.** The "Redirect from" URL must lead to a 404 error page for a rule to trigger. Redirect rules cannot redirect from active pages on your store. ## Test your redirect rule The best way to test a redirect rule is to visit a URL that matches your "Redirect from" pattern. Choose a URL that matches your "Redirect from" pattern and currently shows a 404 error. **Example**: If your rule is `/products/⑴`, test with a broken link like `https://yourstore.com/products/shirt` Paste the full URL into the address bar and press Enter. You should see: * A brief flash of the 404 page (this is normal) * Automatic redirect to your "Redirect to" destination * The correct page loads with wildcard token content preserved ## Understanding the redirect delay You may notice a split-second delay where the 404 page flashes before redirecting. This is expected behavior. **Why the delay happens:** * Redirect rules use JavaScript that runs in the browser rather than 301 redirects * The browser must load the 404 page first, then execute the redirect * This creates a brief visible delay **How to minimize the delay:** 1. **Browser caching**: After the first visit, the browser caches the redirect and subsequent visits are much faster. 2. **Convert to 301 redirects (Enterprise)**: For high-traffic URLs, use [rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) to identify frequently-accessed URLs and [convert them to 301 redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches). This eliminates the delay entirely and provides SEO benefits. 301 redirects happen before the page loads, so there's no visible delay. Consider converting your most-visited URLs to 301s for a better user experience. ## What to test ### Verify rule matching Test URLs that **should** match: **Rule**: Redirect from `/blog/old-posts/⑴` **Test these** (should redirect): * `/blog/old-posts/announcement` ✓ * `/blog/old-posts/update-2023` ✓ ### Verify wildcard tokens If using multiple tokens, confirm they capture correctly: **Rule**: * Redirect from: `/blog/⑴/category/⑵` * Redirect to: `/news/⑴/⑵` **Test**: Visit `/blog/2024/category/updates` * Should redirect to: `/news/2024/updates` * Verify both "2024" and "updates" appear in the destination ## Common issues **Possible causes:** * App embed not activated in theme editor * Usage quota limit reached * "Redirect from" URL doesn't actually show a 404 error (page is active) * Pattern doesn't match the URL being tested **Fix**: See [Redirect rule not working](/redirect-pro/help/redirect-rule-issues/redirect-rule-not-working) for troubleshooting steps. **Possible causes:** * Wildcard tokens in wrong order in "Redirect to" field * Wrong destination URL configured **Fix**: [Edit the rule](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/edit-delete-redirect-rules) and verify your wildcard token positions. ## Related guides * [Create a redirect rule](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/create-redirect-rule) - Set up rules to test * [Edit or delete redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/edit-delete-redirect-rules) - Fix issues found during testing * [View and manage rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) - Monitor real usage (Enterprise) * [Convert matches to permanent redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) - Eliminate redirect delays (Enterprise) ## Need help? Use this data to convert high-traffic URLs into permanent 301 redirects for better SEO and unlimited visits. ## What are rule matches? When a visitor accesses a broken URL that matches one of your redirect rules, Redirect Pro records: * The exact URL the visitor tried to access ("Redirect from") * Where the visitor was redirected to ("Redirect to") * How many times this specific URL pattern was accessed ## Why use rule matches? **SEO benefits:** * Convert high-traffic URLs to permanent 301 redirects * 301s send stronger ranking signals to search engines **Quota savings:** * 301 redirects have unlimited visits (don't count toward your quota) * Free up tracked visits for redirect rules that need flexibility **Better user experience:** * 301 redirects happen instantly with no visible delay * Eliminate the split-second delay from JavaScript redirects **Rule of thumb**: Any URL accessed **10+ times per month** is a good candidate for conversion to a permanent 301 redirect. ## View rule matches From your Shopify admin, open the **Redirect Pro** app. Click **Redirect rules** in the app navigation menu. Look for the **matches count** in the rule's row. A "View matches" button appears next to rules that have recorded matches. If no "View matches" button appears, the rule hasn't matched any visitor URLs yet. Click the **View matches** button to open the rule matches page. Matches are organized into three tabs: * **For review**: New matches that need action * **Converted**: Matches already converted to 301 redirects * **Hidden**: Matches you've dismissed as irrelevant ## Understanding match data The matches table shows: | Column | Description | | ------------------- | -------------------------------------- | | **Redirect from** | The exact broken URL visitors accessed | | **Redirect to** | Where the rule redirected them | | **Visits** | How many times this URL was accessed | | **Last updated at** | Most recent visit timestamp | **What the data tells you:** * **High visit counts (10+)** - Strong candidates for 301 conversion * **Low visit counts (1-5)** - Less critical, can remain as rule matches * **Recent activity** - Currently relevant URLs * **Old timestamps** - Historical patterns that may no longer be relevant ## Convert matches into 301 redirects Turn high-traffic matches into permanent redirects for SEO benefits. New matches appear here by default. Check the boxes next to URLs you want to convert. Click the **Create redirect** button in the actions menu above the table. **What happens after conversion:** * New 301 redirects are created in your URL Redirects list * Matches move to the "Converted" tab * Future visits to these URLs use the 301 (unlimited, no quota impact) * The redirect rule continues to match other URLs ## Hide irrelevant matches Declutter your "For review" list by hiding matches you don't need to convert. Check the boxes next to URLs that are: * Low traffic (1-2 visits) * Test URLs you created * No longer relevant Click the **Hide** button in the actions menu. **What happens after hiding:** * Matches move to the "Hidden" tab * They're removed from your "For review" queue * The redirect rule still works for these URLs * Hiding has no impact on the redirect rule itself Hiding matches is purely for visual organization. The redirect rule continues to match and redirect these URLs - they just won't clutter your "For review" list. ## Managing tabs ### For review tab New matches appear here automatically. Use this tab to: * Review newly-triggered URLs * Identify conversion candidates * Hide irrelevant matches ### Converted tab Shows matches you've already converted to 301 redirects. This tab helps you: * Track which URLs have been optimized * Verify conversions were successful * Reference conversion history ### Hidden tab Shows matches you've dismissed. Use this tab to: * Review previously hidden matches * Move matches back to "For review" or convert to 301s if needed * Clean up old hidden matches ## Common use cases **Scenario**: You migrated your site and created redirect rules. Now you want to see which old URLs are still getting traffic. **Action**: 1. Wait 30 days after migration 2. Review rule matches sorted by visit count 3. Convert URLs with 10+ visits to 301 redirects 4. Hide test URLs and low-traffic matches **Scenario**: You closed a market and want to find which country-specific URLs need permanent redirects. **Action**: 1. Check matches for your market redirect rule 2. Identify which products/collections are most affected 3. Convert high-traffic items to 301 redirects 4. Keep the rule active for edge cases **Scenario**: You have several redirect rules and want to remove ones that aren't being used. **Action**: 1. Check rules with zero matches 2. Verify they're truly unused (check rule creation date) 3. Delete rules with no matches after 30+ days ## Related guides * [Understanding redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-overview) - Learn how redirect rules work * [Create a redirect rule](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/create-redirect-rule) - Set up rules that generate matches * [Create a redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) - Understand 301 redirects * [Understanding usage quotas](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/usage-quotas) - Learn about tracked visits and quota savings ## Need help? Visit a non-existent URL on your store (e.g., `yourstore.com/test-404`) 2. Wait 60 seconds 3. Check the Broken Links page (both the "Unresolved" and "Hidden" tabs) 4. If the URL appears, tracking is working If not appearing, continue troubleshooting below. ## Common causes ### 1. App embed not activated **Most common issue:** Broken link tracking requires the app embed to be turned on. **Check:** 1. Shopify admin → **Online Store → Themes** 2. Click **Customize** on your live theme 3. Click **App embeds** icon (puzzle piece) 4. Find **Redirect Pro** 5. Ensure toggle is **ON** 6. Click **Save** **After enabling:** * New broken link visits will be tracked * Test by visiting a 404 URL ### 2. Usage quota reached **Issue:** If you've hit your monthly tracked visits limit, broken link tracking pauses. **Check:** Settings shows your quota usage (e.g., "500 / 500 tracked visits"). **When quota is reached:** * New 404 visits aren't recorded * Existing broken links data remains visible * 301 redirects still work (unlimited) **Fix:** * Wait until quota resets next month * [Upgrade your plan](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription) for more visits * Create 301 redirects for existing broken links to free up future quota ### 3. No broken link visits yet **Issue:** The table only populates when customers visit 404 pages. **Why it's empty:** * No one has accessed broken URLs yet * All URLs on your store are working * Recent install with no activity yet **This is normal:** * New stores with no URL changes * Stores with comprehensive redirects already in place * Stores with no broken external links **Test it:** Visit a non-existent URL to verify tracking is working. ### 4. URLs are already redirected **Issue:** URLs covered by 301 redirects or redirect rules don't appear in broken links. **Why:** If a URL redirects successfully, there's no 404 error to track. **Check:** * Search your URL Redirects for the URL * Check if a redirect rule is catching it * This is correct behavior - redirected URLs won't show as broken ### 5. Domain set up issues It's possible your domain configuration needs updating. If none of the solutions above resolve the issue, [contact us](/redirect-pro/help/support/contact-support) with your myshopify.com URL so we can help. ## Understanding what gets tracked **Tracked:** * ✓ Actual customer visits to 404 error pages on your store **Not tracked:** * ✗ Internal broken links until customers visit them * ✗ URLs covered by 301 redirects (they redirect successfully) * ✗ URLs covered by redirect rules (appear in rule matches on Enterprise) * ✗ Server errors (500 errors) * ✗ Active pages (no 404 error) Broken link tracking is visit-based, not a site crawler. It only detects 404s when visitors access them. ## Still not working? **Get help:** [Contact support](/redirect-pro/help/support/contact-support) with: * Your myshopify.com URL * Broken URL you're testing # Frequently asked questions Source: https://docs.scayla.io/redirect-pro/help/faqs Common questions and quick answers about Redirect Pro ## Getting Started **301 redirects:** * Permanent, server-side redirects * Only work on broken pages (404 errors) * One redirect per URL * Unlimited visits (don't count toward quota) * SEO benefits — search engines transfer rankings * Instant redirect (no delay) **Live redirects:** * JavaScript-based redirects for active pages * Only work on pages that are still live on your store * One redirect per URL * Counts toward monthly tracked visits quota * No SEO benefits * Brief delay before redirect (page loads first) **Redirect rules:** * JavaScript-based pattern matching with wildcards * Only work on broken pages (404 errors) * One rule handles multiple URLs * Counts toward monthly tracked visits quota * No SEO benefits * Brief delay before redirect Use **301 redirects** for permanent changes to broken URLs where SEO matters. Use **live redirects** when you need to redirect visitors from an active page. Use **redirect rules** for managing bulk URL changes with patterns. Yes - activate the app embed in your theme: 1. Shopify admin → **Online Store → Themes** 2. Click **Customize** on your live theme 3. Click **App embeds** icon (puzzle piece) 4. Find **Redirect Pro** and toggle **ON** 5. Click **Save** Without this step, redirect rules, live redirects, and broken link tracking won't work. 301 redirects work without the app embed. **Counts toward quota:** * 404 page visits (broken links) * Redirect rule activations * Live redirect visits **Does NOT count (unlimited):** * 301 redirect visits * Normal page visits Each plan has different quota limits: * Free: 10 tracked visits/month * Starter: 50 tracked visits/month * Growth: 500 tracked visits/month * Enterprise: Unlimited ## Most Common Issues **Most common causes:** **1. App embed not activated (90% of cases)** - Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes - Click Customize → App embeds - Turn ON Redirect Pro toggle - Click Save **2. Usage quota reached** - Check dashboard for quota usage - Upgrade plan or wait for monthly reset - Convert patterns to 301 redirects **3. Pattern doesn't match the URL** - Verify wildcard tokens are correct: `⑴` `⑵` `⑶` - Test with multiple URLs that should match - Check for case sensitivity **4. URL has an active page** - Redirect rules only work on 404 error pages - To redirect from active pages, use [live redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/create-live-redirect) instead See [Redirect rule not working](/redirect-pro/help/redirect-rule-issues/redirect-rule-not-working) for complete troubleshooting. **Most common causes:** **1. App embed not activated** - Same fix as redirect rules above - Must be turned on in theme editor **2. Usage quota reached** - Check quota usage on dashboard - Tracking pauses when quota is full **3. No broken link visits yet** - Table only populates when customers visit 404 pages - Test by visiting a non-existent URL - Wait 60 seconds for data to appear **4. URLs are already redirected** - URLs with 301 redirects don't appear as broken - URLs covered by redirect rules appear in rule matches (Enterprise) See [Broken link tracking not working](/redirect-pro/help/broken-link-issues/broken-link-tracking-not-working) for complete troubleshooting. This is expected behavior. Redirect rules use JavaScript that runs in the browser after the 404 page loads, creating a brief visible delay. **To eliminate the delay:** - Enterprise users: use rule matches to identify and convert high-traffic URLs to 301 redirects - 301s redirect instantly with no delay The delay is a trade-off for rule flexibility. Use 301 redirects when instant redirects are important. See [Redirect rule has delay](/redirect-pro/help/redirect-rule-issues/redirect-rule-has-delay) for details. **Common reasons:** **Wrong file format:** - Must be `.csv` (not .xls, .xlsx, .tsv) - Save as "CSV (Comma delimited)" **Missing or incorrect headers:** - Row 1 must have: `Redirect from,Redirect to` - Exact spelling and capitalization required **Wrong delimiter:** - Must use commas (not semicolons, tabs, or pipes) Download a copy of our [spreadsheet template](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WjPgXRC3c1XXkzrksNq5DXDbSRtxzPjPqWLtjhALTXo/edit?usp=sharing) to make sure you have the right column headers. See [Import file rejected](/redirect-pro/help/redirect-issues/import-file-rejected) for fixes. ## Broken Link Tracking The table only populates when customers visit 404 error pages. **Common reasons it's empty:** * App embed not activated (tracking disabled) * Usage quota reached (tracking paused) * No one has accessed broken URLs yet * All your URLs are working or already redirected **Test it:** Visit a non-existent URL on your store, wait 2-3 minutes, then check the table. No. It's **visit-based tracking**, not a site crawler. **What it tracks:** * Actual customer visits to 404 pages * Broken links when people click them **What it doesn't track:** * Internal broken links until someone visits them * Broken links that no one accesses This minimizes noise and focuses on broken links that actually impact customers. No. Currently Redirect Pro doesn't have a feature to export broken links. However, if you [contact us](https://support.scayla.io/hc/requests/new) we'll be more than happy to provide this manually for you. ## Redirect Rules Wildcard tokens (`⑴` `⑵` `⑶` `⑷` `⑸`) match any set of characters in a URL between two forward slashes or at the end of the URL and let you reuse them in the destination. **Example:** - Redirect from: `/old-products/⑴` - Redirect to: `/products/⑴` **Result:** - `/old-products/shirt` → `/products/shirt` - `/old-products/pants` → `/products/pants` The `⑴` captures whatever comes after `/old-products/` and reuses it in the new URL. You can use up to 5 tokens per rule. Yes, if you're on the **Enterprise plan**. **Rule matches** show: - Specific URLs that triggered each rule - How many times each was accessed - Ability to convert high-traffic URLs to 301 redirects **How to access:** 1. Go to Redirect Rules 2. Click **View matches** next to any rule This feature is only available on Enterprise. Yes. In the "Redirect to" field, include the full URL: `https://example.com/page` The redirect rule will send visitors to that external domain. Unlimited redirect rules on all plans. However, each time a rule is activated (when a visitor triggers it), it counts toward your monthly tracked visits quota. ## 301 Redirects Up to 200,000 on all plans. Each 301 redirect has unlimited visits - they never count toward your quota. No. 301 redirects only work on broken links (404 errors). If you need to redirect visitors from an active page, you have two options: 1. **Use a [live redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/create-live-redirect)** — redirects visitors from the active page (no SEO benefits) 2. **Delete or unpublish the page first**, then create a 301 redirect for SEO benefits 301 redirects take effect immediately after creation. Test in an incognito browser to avoid cached results. Yes. Use the full URL in "Redirect to": `https://example.com` This works for 301 redirects, live redirects, and redirect rules. ## Live Redirects Live redirects let you redirect visitors away from active pages on your store. Unlike 301 redirects (which only work on broken 404 pages), live redirects work on pages that are still live and accessible. They use JavaScript running in the browser, so they don't provide SEO benefits. Use them when a page must remain active but you want to send visitors elsewhere. See [Understanding live redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/live-redirects-overview) for details. No. Live redirects use JavaScript in the browser, which search engines cannot follow. They provide no SEO benefits. If you need SEO benefits, use a [301 redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) instead. 301 redirects only work on broken pages (404 errors) but transfer search engine rankings to the new URL. Live redirects are designed for active pages. While they may technically work on any page, you should use a [301 redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) for 404 pages to get SEO benefits and unlimited visits that don't count toward your quota. Yes. Live redirects require the Redirect Pro app embed to be enabled in your Shopify theme. This is the same app embed used for broken link tracking and redirect rules. Live redirects work on the following active page types: products, collections, pages, blogs, articles, list collections, and search. ## Plans and Billing **All plans include:** - Unlimited 301 redirects - Live redirects - Unlimited redirect rules - Broken link tracking - Bulk import - Analytics **Plan differences:** - **Free:** 10 tracked visits/month - **Starter:** 50 tracked visits/month - **Growth:** 500 tracked visits/month - **Enterprise:** Unlimited tracked visits + rule matches feature See the pricing table on the [welcome page](/index) for details. Yes, anytime. Plan changes and quota adjustments take effect immediately. See [Manage your subscription](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription) for details. **At 100% quota:** - Broken link tracking pauses (new 404 visits not recorded) - Redirect rules pause (pattern redirects stop working) - Live redirects pause (active page redirects stop working) - 301 redirects continue working (unlimited) - Existing data remains accessible **Options:** * Wait until next month (quota resets automatically) - Upgrade to higher plan for instant quota increase No. Your quota resets to the full amount every month. Unused visits from one month don't roll over to the next. No. Redirect Pro doesn't have a free trial of paid plans but has a Free forever plan you can use for testing out the app. ## Still need help? Open an incognito browser window 2. Visit the "Redirect from" URL (the active page) 3. Check if you're redirected to the destination URL If not redirecting, continue troubleshooting below. ## Common causes ### 1. App embed not activated **Most common issue:** Live redirects require the Redirect Pro app embed to be turned on. This is the same embed used for broken link tracking and redirect rules. **Check:** 1. Shopify admin → **Online Store → Themes** 2. Click **Edit theme** on your live theme 3. Click **App embeds** icon in the left sidebar menu 4. Find **Redirect Pro** 5. Ensure toggle is **ON** 6. Click **Save** ### 2. Usage quota reached **Issue:** If you've hit your monthly tracked visits limit, live redirects pause along with redirect rules and broken link tracking. **Check:** Settings shows quota usage (e.g., "500 / 500 tracked visits"). **Fix:** * Wait until quota resets next month * [Upgrade your plan](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription) for more visits ### 3. URL has a typo or doesn't match **Issue:** The "Redirect from" URL on the live redirect doesn't exactly match the page URL you're testing. **Common mistakes:** * Typo in the URL path * Missing or extra trailing slash * Wrong query parameters **Fix:** Go to the **Live redirects** tab on the URL Redirects page and verify the "Redirect from" URL exactly matches the page you're testing. ### 4. Browser caching **Issue:** Your browser may be caching a previous version of the page without the redirect. **Check:** Test in incognito mode or with a different browser or device. **Fix:** Clear your browser cache or use incognito to verify the live redirect is working. ## Understanding live redirect behavior **Live redirects are JavaScript-based:** * Run in the visitor's browser (not server-side) * Only work on active pages (not 404 error pages) * May show a brief flash of the original page before redirecting * Provide no SEO benefits (use [301 redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) for SEO) The brief flash of the original page before redirecting is normal behavior. This happens because the page must load before the JavaScript redirect can execute. ## Still not working? **Get help:** [Contact support](/redirect-pro/help/support/contact-support) with: * Your myshopify.com URL * The "Redirect from" URL of the live redirect * The "Redirect to" URL # Import file rejected Source: https://docs.scayla.io/redirect-pro/help/redirect-issues/import-file-rejected Your CSV file was rejected during upload. Save and re-upload ### Missing or incorrect column headers **Error:** "Missing Redirect from header" or "Missing Redirect to header" **Cause:** First row doesn't have the exact headers. **Required headers (row 1):** * Cell A1: `Redirect from` * Cell B1: `Redirect to` **Fix:** Add the exact header row at the top of your CSV: ```csv theme={null} Redirect from,Redirect to /old-page,/new-page ``` Headers are case-sensitive and must match exactly. ## Still rejected? **Get help:** [Contact support](/redirect-pro/help/support/contact-support) and attach your CSV file for us to review. # 301 redirect not saving Source: https://docs.scayla.io/redirect-pro/help/redirect-issues/redirect-not-saving Fix validation errors preventing you from creating individual 301 redirects ## Common creation errors ### "Redirect from URL already exists" **Cause:** A redirect for this URL already exists. **Check:** Search your URL Redirects list for the "Redirect from" URL. **Fix:** * Edit the existing redirect instead of creating a new one * Or delete the existing redirect first, then create the new one ### "Cannot redirect from active page" **Cause:** The "Redirect from" URL is an active page on your store. **Why it matters:** 301 redirects only work on broken links (404 errors). **Fix:** You have two options: 1. [**Use a live redirect**](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/create-live-redirect) to redirect visitors from the active page (no SEO benefits) 2. **Delete or unpublish the page** at that URL, then create a 301 redirect for SEO benefits **Check:** Visit the "Redirect from" URL. If a page loads, that's the issue. ### "Invalid redirect from URL" **Cause:** The URL format is incorrect. **Common issues:** * Missing leading slash: `old-page` → use `/old-page` * Includes domain: `https://yourstore.com/page` → use `/page` * Contains spaces: `/old page` → use `/old-page` * Invalid characters or encoding issues **Fix:** Use only the URL path with proper formatting: * Correct: `/products/old-item` * Correct: `/collections/sale` ### "Invalid redirect to URL" **Cause:** The destination URL is malformed. **For internal pages:** * Use path only: `/products/new-item` ✓ * Don't include domain: `https://yourstore.com/products/new-item` ✗ **For external URLs:** * Include full URL: `https://example.com` ✓ * Include https\://: Required for external links ### "Creates redirect loop" **Cause:** The redirect points back to itself or creates a circular chain. **Examples:** * `/page` redirects to `/page` (self-loop) * `/page-a` → `/page-b` → `/page-a` (circular) **Fix:** Change the "Redirect to" URL to break the loop. ## Field-specific requirements ### Redirect from field **Must:** * Start with `/` * Use only internal URL paths (no domain) * Point to a URL that shows 404 error (no active page) **Cannot include:** * Domain name: `yourstore.com` * Spaces: `/old page` * Protocol: `https://` ### Redirect to field **For internal redirects:** * Use path only: `/products/new-item` * Include leading `/` **For external redirects:** * Use full URL: `https://example.com` * Must include `https://` or `http://` **Can point to:** * Products, collections, pages, blog posts, etc. * Homepage: `/` * External websites ## Preventing errors **Before creating:** * Verify the "Redirect from" URL returns 404 error * Check the "Redirect to" URL works when visited directly * Use correct URL format (paths for internal, full URLs for external) * Search for existing redirects to avoid duplicates **Testing:** 1. Open an incognito browser window 2. Visit the "Redirect from" URL 3. Check if you're redirected to the "Redirect to" URL If not redirecting, continue troubleshooting below. ## Common causes ### 1. Active page at redirect from URL **Issue:** 301 redirects only work on broken links (404 errors). You cannot redirect from a URL that has an active page. **Check:** Visit the "Redirect from" URL directly. If a page loads instead of showing 404, the redirect won't work. **Fix:** You have two options: * **Use a [live redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/create-live-redirect)** to redirect visitors from the active page (no SEO benefits) * **Delete or unpublish the page first**, then the 301 redirect will activate with full SEO benefits If you set a product to Draft or remove it from all sales channels, or set a collection to "Hidden" in Online Store visibility, the URL will return a 404 error and become eligible for 301 redirects. ### 2. Browser caching old page **Check:** Test in incognito mode or a different browser. **Fix:** Clear your browser cache or use incognito to verify the redirect is working. 301 redirects are cached by browsers and search engines. If you recently removed a redirect after customers have accessed it, then the redirect might continue to work in their browsers until the cache expires. ### 3. Redirect doesn't exist **Check:** Verify the redirect exists in your URL Redirects list and the Redirect from and Redirect to URLs are correct without any typos. **Fix:** If missing, [create the redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) again. ### 4. Reached redirect limit **Check:** Check that you haven't exceeded Shopify's redirect limits: * **Standard stores:** 100,000 redirects maximum * **Shopify Plus stores:** 20,000,000 redirects maximum **Fix:** If you've reached the limit, delete old unused redirects to free up capacity. ## Additional troubleshooting You cannot redirect from a URL ending in `.html` to the same URL without `.html`. Shopify treats these as the same URL because the platform automatically handles HTML formatting for cleaner URLs. **Example that won't work:** * ❌ `/old-page.html` → `/old-page` **Workaround:** Redirect to a completely different URL: * ✓ `/old-page.html` → `/new-page` URLs with complex query strings or special characters (such as `/brands/dell.html?_bc_fsnf=1&interface=type`) may not redirect as expected. Test these redirects thoroughly after creation. Consider using simpler URLs when possible. If your 404 page redirects to the home page when viewing it in the theme editor, this is likely caused by a redirect. **Check:** Do you have a redirect set up from `/404` to `/` (home page)? **Why it's a problem:** This redirect interferes with the theme editor's ability to display your 404 page and execute other redirects. **Fix:** Delete the `/404` → `/` redirect. Your 404 page template will handle visitors who land on broken URLs. ## Still not working? [Contact support](/redirect-pro/help/support/contact-support) with: * Your myshopify.com URL * The "Redirect from" URL * The "Redirect to" URL # Redirects failed to import Source: https://docs.scayla.io/redirect-pro/help/redirect-issues/redirects-failed-to-import Fix validation errors preventing redirects from being created during import ## Understanding import results After import, Shopify emails you an **Import URL Redirect Summary** with: **Created:** Successfully imported redirects **Updated:** Existing redirects that were modified **Errors:** Failed redirects with error messages and CSV line numbers ## Common validation errors ### Invalid URLs **Error:** "Path is invalid" or "Target is invalid" **Cause:** The input is not a valid URL. **Fix:** Make sure your "Redirect from" URL is an internal link containing only the path (`/old-link`) and not your domain (`https://yourstore.com/old-link`). A "Redirect to" URL can be in either format. ### Blank URLs **Error:** "Path can't be blank" or "Target can't be blank" **Cause:** In the specified `csv` row, the "Redirect from" or the "Redirect to" URL was not specified. **Fix:** Ensure each row contains both a "Redirect from" and "Redirect to" URL. ### Redirect chains **Error:** "Target can't redirect to another redirect" **Cause:** Redirects cannot be chained together. This means link A cannot be redirected to link B, if B is already being redirected to C. **Fix:** In this context, try redirecting link A to link C instead to flatten the chain. ### Prohibited "Redirect from" URLs **Error:** "Path cannot be a Shopify system page" **Cause:** Shopify doesn't permit redirects for certain pages (like checkout or account pages) * URLs that begin with the following prefixes can't be redirected: `/apps`, `/application`, `/cart`, `/carts`, `/orders`, or `/services`. * These specific pages can't be redirected: `/products`, `/collections`, `/collections/all`. ### Redirect loop **Error:** "Target can't be the same as path" **Cause:** A broken link can't be redirected to itself. **Fix:** Try changing either the 'Redirect from' or 'Redirect to' URLs. ### Redirects limit reached **Error:** "Too many redirects" **Cause:** Shopify maintains a limit of 200,000 redirects per store. Although any error message may not be displayed Shopify will not process the creation of new redirects after the limit is reached. **Fix:** Try deleting some old or unused redirects. ## Fix and re-import **Steps:** 1. Check the import summary email for specific error messages and line numbers 2. Open your original CSV file 3. Fix the errors on the listed line numbers 4. Create a new CSV with only the failed redirects 5. Re-import the corrected file ## Still having issues? **Get help:** [Contact support](/redirect-pro/help/support/contact-support) with: * Your myshopify.com URL * Your CSV file * The import summary email or which specific errors you're seeing # Redirect rule has delay Source: https://docs.scayla.io/redirect-pro/help/redirect-rule-issues/redirect-rule-has-delay Redirect rules may show a brief delay or flash of the 404 page before redirecting. This is expected behavior. ## Why the delay happens **Redirect rules use JavaScript:** * Run in the visitor's browser (client-side) * Browser must load the 404 page first * Then JavaScript executes the redirect * This creates a short delay (typically under 1 second) **This is different from 301 redirects:** * 301 redirects happen server-side (before page loads) * No visible delay or 404 flash * Instant redirect ## The delay is normal **What visitors see:** 1. Click link or enter URL 2. Brief flash of 404 error page 3. Automatic redirect to destination 4. Destination page loads The 404 flash and delay are inherent to how redirect rules work. This is expected behavior, not a bug. [Live redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/live-redirects-overview) also have a similar delay because they use the same JavaScript-based approach, but on active pages instead of 404 pages. ## Minimize the delay ### 1. Browser caching helps After the first visit, browsers cache the JavaScript redirect: * First visit: Split-second delay * Second visit: Much faster * Regular visitors: Minimal delay No action needed - this happens automatically. ### 2. Convert to 301 redirects (recommended) For URLs that get consistent traffic, Enterprise users can view and convert these to permanent 301 redirects: **Benefits:** * No delay (instant server-side redirect) * No 404 flash * Better for SEO * Unlimited visits (doesn't count toward quota) **How to convert (Enterprise):** 1. View [rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) 2. Identify high-traffic URLs (10+ visits) 3. Select and [convert matches to 301 redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) ## When to use redirect rules vs 301s **Use redirect rules for:** * When you're not sure what all the broken links matching a pattern are * Temporary redirects that may change * Testing redirect patterns **Use 301 redirects for:** * Known permanent URL changes * High-traffic URLs (10+ visits/month) * SEO-important pages * When you want instant redirects ## Related guides * [Understanding redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/redirect-rules-overview) - Learn how rules work * [Create a 301 redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) - Set up 301 redirects * [Understanding live redirects](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/live-redirects-overview) - Active page redirects (also JavaScript-based) * [View and manage rule matches](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) - Convert to 301s (Enterprise) * [Test redirect rules](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/test-redirect-rules) - Understand expected behavior # Redirect rule not working Source: https://docs.scayla.io/redirect-pro/help/redirect-rule-issues/redirect-rule-not-working If your redirect rule isn't working, check these common causes. ## Quick diagnostics **Test the rule:** 1. Open an incognito browser window 2. Visit a URL that should match your rule pattern 3. Check if you're redirected If not redirecting, continue troubleshooting below. ## Common causes ### 1. App embed not activated **Most common issue:** Redirect rules require the app embed to be turned on. **Check:** 1. Shopify admin → **Online Store → Themes** 2. Click **Customize** on your live theme 3. Click **App embeds** icon (puzzle piece) 4. Find **Redirect Pro** 5. Ensure toggle is **ON** 6. Click **Save** ### 2. Usage quota reached **Issue:** If you've hit your monthly tracked visits limit, redirect rules pause. **Check:** Dashboard shows quota usage (e.g., "500 / 500 tracked visits"). **Fix:** * Wait until quota resets next month * [Upgrade your plan](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription) for more visits * Convert high-traffic patterns to 301 redirects ### 3. Pattern doesn't match URL **Issue:** The "Redirect from" pattern doesn't match the URL you're testing. **Common mistakes:** * Wrong pattern structure: `/blog/⑴` doesn't match `/news/post` **Fix:** [Edit the rule](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/edit-delete-redirect-rules) to correct the pattern. **Test patterns:** Try visiting multiple URLs that should match to verify your pattern. ### 4. Redirect from URL is active **Issue:** Redirect rules only work on broken links (404 errors). **Check:** Visit the URL you're testing. If a page loads instead of 404, the rule won't work. **Fix:** Redirect rules are for handling broken URLs. To redirect visitors from active pages, use a [live redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/create-live-redirect) instead. ### 5. 301 redirect takes priority **Issue:** If a 301 redirect exists for the URL, it will redirect before the rule can match. **Check:** Search your URL Redirects list for the specific URL. **Fix:** This is correct behavior - 301 redirects should take priority. Delete the 301 if you want the rule to handle it instead. ### 6. Browser caching **Check:** Test in incognito mode or a different browser. **Fix:** Clear browser cache or use incognito to verify the rule is working. ## Understanding redirect rule behavior **Redirect rules are JavaScript-based:** * Run in the visitor's browser (not server-side) * Only activate on 404 error pages * May show brief flash of 404 page before redirecting * Provide no SEO benefits (use 301 redirects for SEO) ## Still not working? **Get help:** [Contact support](/redirect-pro/help/support/contact-support) with: * Your myshopify.com URL * Details of your redirect rule # Contact support Source: https://docs.scayla.io/redirect-pro/help/support/contact-support Need help with Redirect Pro? They preserve SEO rankings and redirect instantly. Use these for specific URL changes where the original page no longer exists. **Live redirects** are JavaScript-based redirects for active pages that are still live on your store. They don't provide SEO benefits but let you redirect visitors between active pages. Use these when a page must remain active but you want to send visitors elsewhere. **Redirect rules** use patterns to automatically redirect multiple 404 URLs at once (e.g., all `/collections/*` URLs). Use these for bulk redirects or when broken URLs follow a pattern. 301 redirects and redirect rules only work on broken pages (404 errors) and help preserve your SEO. Live redirects work on active pages but don't provide SEO benefits. Choose the right type based on whether the page is active or broken. ## Choose your plan All plans include 301 redirects, live redirects, redirect rules, broken link tracking, bulk import, and analytics. Not sure which plan you need? Check our [subscriptions guide](/redirect-pro/guides/account-and-settings/manage-subscription) to find the right fit for your store. Tracked visits include: * **404 page visits**: When someone hits a broken link on your store * **Redirect rule activations**: When a visitor triggers a redirect rule * **Live redirect visits**: When a visitor is redirected from an active page by a live redirect Tracked visits do **not** include: * **301 redirect visits**: These are unlimited on all plans. Think of tracked visits as the "active work" Redirect Pro does each month to catch problems and apply dynamic redirects. Rule matches show you the actual URLs visitors accessed that triggered your redirect rules. You can review these matches and convert high-traffic patterns into permanent 301 redirects for better SEO performance and faster redirects. This is valuable for migrations, replatforming, or when you want to optimize which redirect method handles your traffic. ## Quick links Redirect broken pages with SEO benefits Redirect active pages Bulk upload from CSV Automate with patterns View 404 errors Contact support ## Need help? * **Browse guides**: Explore task-based guides in the [Guides](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) tab to learn how to use features * **Troubleshooting**: Visit the [Help](/redirect-pro/help/faqs) tab if something isn't working as expected * **Contact support**: [Reach out to our team](/redirect-pro/help/support/contact-support) for personalized assistance **New to redirects?** Start with [Create a 301 redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/managing-301-redirects/create-301-redirect) for broken pages, or [Create a live redirect](/redirect-pro/guides/using-live-redirects/create-live-redirect) for active pages. Live redirect visits count towards your usage quota. ### App Status Block Check your Redirect Pro app embed status directly from the homepage. ### Multi-Domain Support Redirect Pro now identifies broken links on all your domains, not just primary. ### Rule Matches Enterprise plan users can now see which URLs triggered their redirect rules and convert high-traffic URLs to permanent 301 redirects for SEO benefits. [Learn more →](/redirect-pro/guides/working-with-redirect-rules/view-manage-rule-matches) ### Redirect Rules Automatic and pattern redirects are now redirect rules. Redirect rules use URL patterns to automatically redirect multiple similar URLs at once. Instead of creating individual redirects for each URL, one rule can handle hundreds or thousands of redirects.
